Historically, oven cleaners have been notoriously toxic, but this organic oven cleaner has been around for decades, and has worked almost ''like magic'' every time! Granted, if the oven is really grimy it may take a bit more elbow grease to get the wanted results, but isn't breathing easy and happy skin worth it? YES!!

Text module

I was introduced to this very simple & effective organic oven cleaner in 1973, and have happily been using it ever since. My critters have benefited as well... they have not had to breathe those fumes either!!!

The simple ingredients for the organic oven cleaner. Note the stainless napkin holder---perfect for holding the microfiber sponge so that it dries correctly; no yukky sponge smells!

So here is the simple formula ---

1. Mix 2 T. Organic Cleaner and 16 oz. water in a Spray Bottle.

2. In the evening, turn oven on to 150 degrees and keep it there for about 15 minutes.

3. Turn oven off

4. Immediately spray the entire surface with the Heavy Duty Organic Grease Cleaner (formula in step 1)

5. Let sit over night

6. Next day, wipe oven with Microfiber Sponge.

7. For stubborn spots, use a wet Microfiber Sponge with the Super Non-Toxic Scrubbing Paste. Take caution on ''softer'' surfaces and don't over-scrub!

And why avoid those ''regular'' Oven Cleaners?

Dangerous ingredients: Ethers, ethylene glycol, lye (sodium and potassium hydroxide), methylene chloride, petroleum distillates, pine oil

Health hazards: It is hard to avoid breathing in vapors when using oven cleaner. The product is corrosive to skin and eyes, and, when inhaled, to internal organs.

Some Harmful Ingredients

Butane
Ovens are usually coated with charred-carbon crust, which does respond to a solvent, butane. Also an aerosol propellant, liquid butane loosens carbon molecules that conglomerate when other elements evaporate at high temps. A commonly abused inhalant (for the ''high'' it supposedly brings), butane poses severe health risks. Huffing the fumes of other ingredients in oven cleaners would almost certainly kill you first.

Monoethanolamine
Exhibiting properties of both an alcohol (mixes with water, has a high boiling point) and an amine (has a high pH, absorbs water, smells like ammonia), MEA can undergo reactions common to either group of compounds. It helps clean oven surfaces by working on the fatty acids and greases. Do not inhale this cleaner: MEA is a volatile organic compound, which can cause confusion, nosebleeds, and cancer in humans and your beloved pets too.

Diethylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether
A major component of brake fluid, hair coloring, and floor sealer, DEGBE's delay evaporation of monoethanolamine, letting it work longer on the oven. It helps dissolve some of the fats and grease loosened by MEA. Breathing DEGBE vapors while consuming excessive alcohol can lead to kidney and liver problems. Friends don't let friends drink and clean.

Sodium Hydroxide
Butane and MEA soften the hard organic coating, allowing the sodium hydroxide to attack the underlying fats. That reaction gives off heat and results in a simple form of soap.

Diethanolamine
DEA is technically not a volatile organic compound, but it has been shown to limit brain development in the fetuses of pregnant laboratory mice.
