Organic SEO

Organic SEO is the art of getting traffic from the search engines, without the Use of Pay Per Click (PPC). I don't use the term FREE traffic as even though the hits you get don't cost you anything directly, there is a cost involved in getting your pages ranked and in maintaining those rankings with the search engines. This Lens will explore those costs and offer tips in getting your pages ranked well.

Title Tag - the most important "on-page" SEO element

Get this right and the battle is halfway over!

The Title Tag is your friend. In the world of SEO, a well written Title tag will not only help you to rank higher, it also helps you "get the click" when your listing appears near the top of the search engine.

You see, in all major search engines, the title tag is displayed, bolded and clickable in the SERP's. Your title tag needs to not only contain your most important keyphrase, but must also be readable - you want people to click on your listing don't you?

So, going forward, make sure you title tags balance the keywords with compelling "click friendly" text.

Your Link Reputation - what does Google think of you?

The Off Page Factors

Google and most other modern search engines don't just go by what's on your web page when they rank your site. The major search engines today all employ some type of "page rank" formula that looks at how other websites are linking to you.

How does this work?

If I create a web page about "Blue Widgets", I make sure I use the phrase "Blue Widgets" in my Title tag and several times in the text of the article (these are called on page factors). Now, when I link to this article from my site, I'll again use the term "Blue Widgets" in the link text of my link - in other words, the term "Blue Widgets" Is a clickable hyperlink and when someone clicks on this phrase, they'll be transported to my "Blue Widgets" webpage.

...It goes further then this however, if other sites see that article and link to it -it's my hope that they'll also use the phrase "Blue Widgets" in their hyperlink.

Google and the others will see this term, linking to my page and will realize that other sites think this webpage is about "blue widgets". This will boost my rankings for this term.

Post, Post, Post!!!

The search engines want to show their users current results when they search. By making sure your site is update frequently, the search engine spiders crawl your site deeper and more often then a site that stagnates. Additionally, your users will appreciate a site that is current. Keeping your website updated and your content fresh just make sense.

Articles and SEO

How to boost your organic search listings using articles...

Writing articles is a great way to help your website! With article marketing you can get targeted traffic, from the people who are actually reading your article plus, the bigger article directories have a high Page Rank(pr) and pass that pr back to you. Just make sure you write (or have written) decent, focused articles and include a link to your site within the resource box. This is a great way to boost your own PR.

The one problem with SEO though is that you are constantly trying to hit a moving target. I believe that less emphasis should be placed on the technical site of web publishing and more on the actual content.
