Organic Certification In The US

US has its own organic certification agencies that certify products as organic. These agencies examine the products and then certify them as organic after much testing and trials.

USDA
The USDA or the U.S. Department of Agriculture has certain standards which are used for certifying cotton plants and the cotton fibers produced from the plants. Organic cloths are made of such organic certified cotton plant and cotton produced by them. Certified agents of the USDA certification program inspect the products before certifying them as organic. They inspect the products where they are grown or produced.

In the international arena, the organic certification is done by several International organizations. There are national and International certification systems that helps in organic certification.

IFOAM
The International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movements (IFOAM) was established in 1972. It promotes organic movement with the help of its international organic agriculture standards and policies. IFOAM helps in promoting organic agriculture for the benefit of farmers, retailers, traders, and consumers. IFOAM also tries to reconcile the interest of different parties involved in he production, movement and consumption of products. Accrediting agencies perform the certification for IFOAM.
In 1998, IFOAM published a Organic Textile Standards to standardize the organic certification process.

Organic Trade Association (OTA)
It is one of the influential organic certification agencies that develops organic standards for organic textile and garments. It certifies the products and textiles as organic. It is present in the U.S. It has 1500 business members. It did research or five years to develop "The American Organic Standards for Fiber Processing" standard . The OTA standard has four levels in the organic labeling 1. 100% Organic 2. Organic 3. Made with organic (specified fiber products) and 4. Less than 70% organically produced constituents

Institute for Marketecology (IMO)
Institute for Marketecology (IMO) is a organic certifying agency based in Switzerland but it has its presence in the U.S. It offers textile organic certification by various standards such as OTA, Demeter, INV and Soil Association.

SKAL
It is based in the Netherlands but has its presence in the U.S. It is one of the most reputed organic certifying agencies in the world. It offers organic inspection, certification and Skal, based in the Netherlands, is another well known and respected organization that provides organic certification worldwide.

There is a recent development in global textile organic certification, a Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) has been developed by the International Working Group on the Global Textile Standard as part of the International Conference on Organic Textiles (INTERCOT).
