Basic organic gardening supplies

Corn Gluten MealThe following are the basic supplies for organic gardening that I use:

Books and magazines for information, knowledge and reference - Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening and All New Square Foot Gardening are my top two books. If you have a specific area you enjoy such as herbs, fruit trees, etc it would be beneficial to have books on that subject.

Compost pile - you can build your own or buy a composter. Corn Gluten Meal
A good book on composting would also be
worthwhile.

Corn gluten meal - studies have shown corn gluten meal to work as well as chemical pre-emergents while also providing nitrogen.

Diatomaceous earth - fossils of sea life. Sharp to insects, slugs and snails but not harmful to pets or people. Avoid breathing dust while using. Only works when dry. I have seen diatomaceous earth take out an in ground yellow jacket nest when no chemicals would.

Fish emulsion/ liquid kelp - Can be purchased mixed or separately. I like to combine them to fertilize my entire yard and my houseplants. The fishy odor soon dissipates. One tablespoon per gallon every two weeks or so. For outdoors I use a hose end sprayer and let it do the diluting for me.

Horticultural oil - An oil spray should be used on all fruits in the spring before they leaf out to suffocate any creatures overwintering on the bark. Horticultural oil differs from dormant oil so you can use it anytime the temperatures are below 90F. Oil sprays can help control aphids, spider mites, and other pests. If possible avoid spraying when bees are active or you will kill them also.

Insecticial soap - For killing pests of many kinds. It will also kill beneficials so only use when bees are not active and make sure to correctly identify your pest so you aren't mistakenly killing a beneficial. For lawn insects you can dilute the concentrate in a 5 gallon bucket and pour it on the lawn in that area.

Slug control - Iron phosphate slug killers will not harm beneficial insects, birds, or other wildlife or pets. Slug Out is one brand I have used. For more ideas on slug control check my blog on Garden Inspire
