Photo Organization 101

Many of us have experienced the loss of digital photographs that you thought you downloaded and saved. Losing digital photos should be unheard of...but I've proven otherwise. I could just kick myself for not paying attention to a group of garden photos that I believed were packed away neatly in my download folder. Sadly, they were not.
This lens is my contribution to all of the digital photography freaks that are just as distracted by shiny objects as I am.
I hope I can learn something by sharing photo filing suggestions...
I'm always searching for something!
Just ask Rob!

Do Over!

If you're feeling frazzled...just start with one thing.

The best thing about digital cameras is that it's easy to take thousands of pictures..it's also the worst thing about digital cameras!

So...you've owned your camera for a few months (years) and you've taken a bazillion photos...

You've hooked up the cable to your computer and imported the digital images onto your computer in detailed little image folders...right?

Then you've named each image, so that they are really easy to find...right?

Well, I can't claim to be that organized but I know it exists. My business partner and soul mate Rob does it all the time. He can find anything really fast! Not a gray hair on his head.

Let's take a photo organization journey together. We can find a little time each day to begin the photo organization process. Just think of all of the extra time we'll have to create instead of searching for stuff.

There are some wonderful digital photo organization tips on the internet and a few of them give very detailed instruction on how to keep your digital photos organized without wasting a lot of time.

But...

Rob's fail safe digital photo file tips are fast, easy and sensible. You know I'm talking myself into doing this, while I'm trying to convince you:) I do that a lot!

If we follow these tips, we'll end up with a wonderfully organized digital photo library.

Start To Organize Your Current Photo Collection

If you've had a digital camera for awhile...relax. Just start somewhere.

With a little bit of patience, you can start to set up a digital photo system that will help you turn your digital photo memories into a well-organized photo library.

Set aside a little time. Don't feel rushed. Get excited! Sorting through your digital photos is a fun journey down memory lane.

KEEP IT SIMPLE:
1. Start by creating a Main Photo Folder.
2. Create Sub Folders by the Year. {2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008 etc.}
3. Next...create Sub Folders within the Year Sub Folders for specific events, trips and categories. {Examples: Artistic, Events, Personal, People,Travel, Garden, Business etc.}

Start sorting digital images from all of the hiding places on your computer and drag them into the appropriate neatly labeled folder.

It's important to take the time to:

1. Ditch duplicate digital images.
2. Name images as you go...just so you don't have to do it the next time.
3. Keep the best shot if you have several of the same subject, ditch the rest.

If you establish a digital photo file routine and follow every time you download digital photos from your digital camera you'll never be in this place again...now if we could just do the same for our emails:)

DIGITAL PHOTO ROUTINE:
1. Create a new folder.
2. Download the images from the camera.
3. Save images to one of your New Folders.
4. Create category sub folders, if applicable.
5. Take a minute to name the image so you don't have to touch it again...until you need it.

Now...isn't that easy?
That's really all there is to it.
It's not rocket science.
It's a good habit to strive for!
You can do it and so can I!

Once you have your digital images organized into neat little folders you can go crazy with Flickr, Cafepress, Photoshop, Shutterfly and so many more. You might even be able to find those photos you need to start blogging!

Organize

Organizing (also spelled organising) is the act of rearranging Category: wiktionary - :element|elements following one or more Category: wiktionary - :rule|rules.

Anything is commonly considered organized when it looks like everything has a correct order of placement. But it's only ultimately organized if any element has no difference on time taken to find it. In that sense, organizing can also be defined as to place different objects in logical arrangement for better searching.

Organizations are groups of people frequently trying to organize some specific subject, such as political issues. So, even while organizing can be viewed as a simple definition, it can get as complex as organizing the worlds information''.

You don't take a photograph. You ask, quietly, to borrow it.
