Acrylic Paintings on Mexican Tile by Michelle Collins
Several years back, we decided to redo our floors in our first home. We decided on Saltillo tile. After we completed the project we had some extra tiles and I decided to do a painting on one. The surface was nice for painting and I went on to do many more of these over the years.
I do not have any of these available at the moment. They sell as fast as I paint them. I will be doing some more in the near future. Below I have pictures of some of the pieces painted Saltillo tiles that have sold throughout the years.

Displaying Recommendations
These pieces are best displayed on metal display easels. (as shown below) I usually have some on hand when I sell the pieces for purchase along with the artwork.
These tiles are intended for display, I do not recommend these for use in tile work. However, I have had people ask and they only thing I would suggest is if one decides that they are going to install them to make sure it is a very low traffic area.
This is the kind of display easel I use to display the tiles. I usually use 9" tall easels. As I mentioned they must be strong to handle the weight, as to not risk it falling over and breaking the tile.

What is Saltillo tile?
The image shown is what the tiles look like before I painted.
Saltillo tile is a type of terra-cotta tile that originates in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico.[1] It is one of the two most famous products of the city, the other being multi-coloured woven sarapes so typical of the region. Saltillo-type tiles are now manufactured at many places in Mexico, and high-fire "Saltillo look" tiles, many from Italy, compete with the terra-cotta originals
Saltillo tile vary in colour and shape, but the majority range from in varying hues of reds, oranges and yellows. Tiles are shaped either by pressing quarried clay with a wooden frame (super), or carving out the desired shape (regular). Depending on the raw tile's placement among other tiles at the time of firing, its colour ranges from yellow to a rich orange.
