Pimping Project: Orix

Ranked #3,442 in Cars, #178,222 overall

How do you pull off a project without any wheels?

In the months of planning this project which was a part of the Shoot Out Challenge, we didn't consider, until the week before we were to start work, that we'd need ANOTHER car to get us around while the Mighty Boy was in each of the workshops of the respective businesses.

For the first two weeks the car was to be without an engine and/or windscreen. And the only way it was getting around was on the back of a tow truck.

After that we were able to drive it around (yes, it is registered) but at some places it would be in for half a day, a full day, even overnight. So we needed another car to get us around.

Enter Orix

They were approached to be a sponsor of the project and their contribution was the use of one of their cars.

Without them I'm not sure how we would have got around other than relying on public transport, sponged lifts off family and friends and good old fashioned leg power. Though there was only one business within walking distance where that would have been appropriate.

The Good Folk at Orix Hamilton

Jeff and the team at Hamilton are without a doubt, the first place I'd go to buy an affordable second hand car.

They don't just sell any old second hand cars, they sell cars that are as good as new, but without the expensive price tag. All vehicles have had only one previous owner. They are ex-fleet sales specialists.

Fleet cars are reknowned for being well maintained and traded in before any significant kilometres have been put on the clock. Orix passes these good deals on to their customers. Backed with a national warranty.

What impressed me most is that on the occasions we dropped in at the car lot is the sales approach I witnessed. No hard sell. I guess that's because they know they've got the right price, they just need to make sure that their prospective customer is getting the right car.

One guy was after a 2005/2006 Toyota Landcruiser four wheel drive. They didn't have any in stock. And apparently they move pretty quickly. He said he'd drop in every week or so to see if one arrived. They took his name and number and would call him as soon as one did.

There was no "but I'll do you a good deal on one of these...". The guy knew what he wanted.

I'm sure that as soon as the next one came in they would have made a quick sale and the satisfied customer would have got himself an excellent deal.

Big Pimpin'!

For most of the duration, of approximately four weeks, that work was being done on the Mighty Boy we got around in a Ford Falcon.

The V6 engine was a welcome change to the 3 cylinders I was getting used to in the Mighty Boy.

I grew rather fond of the Falcon, and I wasn't sure how I'd cope with handing it back. I envisaged a temper tantrum much like a young child having my candy taken away from me.

On the weekend of the Shoot Out we swapped cars and got around in this...

Those are 22 inch rims. A real head turner. On the night of the launch at Wheeler Place we parked the Orix Pimp Mobile next to the Pimped Out Mighty Boy to make it look even smaller.

The Journey Continues...

What happens next?

Do we get the Sound or the GPS? Or is there a surprise? Or is there disappointment?

We've got two more lenses to finish writing and the story concludes.
