Raising An Orphaned Kitten: River's Story

Meet River Tam!

It's not an easy task to take in an animal into your home. Even less to take care of newborn animal, which needs constant feeding, and warmth. But this is what I was about to take on. Somehow I had ended up with this tiny little creature who couldn't take care of herself; barely 3 days old, I had to do everything for her. This is the story of the summer 2010, when I raised my kitten River, and the last 3 months of her life. Continue to follow along her progress as she grows and gets even more adorable, if possible!

“On June 24th, 2010, I received a phone call to foster a 3 day old kitten...”

How I Ended Up With River

My story of getting this newborn orphaned kitten...

I had been wanting to adopt a kitten for the majority of the summer, and had contacted a few fostering agencies to foster a kitten before I adopted, since I had never owned a cat before. In the afternoon of June 24, 2010, while I was waiting in line for my iPhone 4 (for a good 7 hours, I am such a nerd!), I got a phone call. One of the foster agencies had given my info to the local humane unit, and they had stumbled across a 3 day old kitten who was without a mother. They asked me if I wanted to foster her temporarily, and told me that there was a possibility she would be put down if they couldn't find someone to take care of her, because she would starve otherwise.

Well of course I said yes! I couldn't let this poor, helpless baby be put down just because no one else was to be found!

So right after I got my iPhone, we drove over to the humane unit to pick up the tiny kitten. She was so small, she could fit perfectly into the palm of my hand. And at 3 days old, I would have to feed her every two-three hours. No one thought that she would even make it...

Becoming River Tam

How River Got Her Name

After about three and a half weeks, we still weren't sure about giving her a name. My mom warned me about become to attached to her because she was just a foster kitten, but I wanted to give her a name that wasn't just "kitty". Her feisty personality really started developing around here. She'd be calm and collected one second, and then jump around like a spazzy kitten at the sight of a shoelace. So we decided to name her River Tam, a character from my favorite tv show, Firefly!

A Little About Me

I've loved animals for as long as I can remember, but I've always wanted to have a cat. I love my two dogs with all my heart, but I've always seen myself as more of a cat person. This past summer, I desperately wanted to adopt a cat to take with me to my new apartment, as my family didn't want me taking our beloved dog. What started out as a simple fostering of a kitten turned into an experience I will never forget.

A Hectic Feeding Schedule

River had to eat every 3 hours...

Kitten At Feeding TimeI thought I would go mad with River's feeding schedule. Every three hours I had to get up (whether I was asleep or not) and prepare River's bottle. Getting her to eat was extremely difficult too, as she had no idea how to suckle on a bottle. It took her several times before she finally grasped how to drink from the bottle. The schedule was also made crazy because I was taking summer college classes that were four hours long, with no break, so I had to pick my sister up from her volunteering and take her home so she could feed River. Some days I felt like crying from my lack of sleep; even between her feeding times, I would find myself jumping up in the middle of the night to make sure she was still breathing. The worst part of that first week was when I woke up at 6am to find that I had slept through her feeding time 2 hours ago! I nearly had a heart attack as I ran to make sure she was okay; she didn't even make a peep until I walked in with the bottle, and then she started screeching like a monkey!

River Loves to Play!

She loves crawling into tiny little spaces, and jumping out at you when you least expect it! She climbs up high and watches the room from there, and she absolutely LOVES anything dangly, which makes cords a big issue. She has her favorite feather toy, which I run around the room and she chases it. It's adorable and hilarious. She runs around for hours and hours, playing with the dog and biting at people's ankles, but at the end of the day, there's nothing she loves better than to cuddle up and just sleep in your lap while you watch TV.

This feather toy is something cats absolutely love. It was the first toy she really started playing with, and she loves to attack it and then roll around on the ground chewing on it!

Raising Newborns Isn't Easy...

But sometimes newborns need to be taken care of. They might be orphaned or abandoned, or maybe their mother just can't take care of them due to illness or something else. But someone needs to help these babies!

These helpless creatures need someone to take care of them!

Angela says:

I raised a few little ones. This time I found a litter in my attic we had to bring them down because a few fell though to the basement we were able to bust open the sheet rock and rescued he/she, they are about 5 days old I think the cord is still there I have one more to catch that is still in the attic, the mom will not come in to her other babies but we can't leave them up their they will all die..

Louise Drew says:

Absolutely. I hand reared both my current cats from the age of 2 weeks old. Although it was tiring, as I was working shift work at the time, it was so enjoyable and I can't wait to do it again

JanetClifford says:

Absolutely, every little creature deserves a chance

KimGiancaterino says:

Yes, it's very rewarding.

0ctavias0fferings says:

Without a doubt!

There are plenty more animals in the world with more chance of survival that need care.

Adorable Kitten Poster!

River at 4 Months...

River sitting in my sister's mini backpack!River is 4 months old, and it's so hard to believe how much she's grown! She's gotten almost all of her shots, and she loves to play and be crazy kitty. She is finally eating solid food after the terrible time we had weaning her, and she is completely litter-box trained. I know I would never have been able to raise her without the help of my sister either, so I am eternally grateful.

River also enjoys hopping into boxes and bags, including my sister's mini backpack...I think she wanted to go to school with her!

River turns one year old!

Happy birthday River Monster!

River loves sinks!River's birthday was about a week ago, (June 21st), and it's so amazing to look back and see how she's grown! The people at the humane unit didn't believe River would live a week, and now she is one year old and a healthy cat. She was spayed a few months ago, and has given us some scares with an infection and a cold, but our unruly River Monster (as we have lovingly nicknamed her) is happy and playful.

In case you can't tell, River has grown to love sinks almost more than she loves her bed. The picture is not completely up to date, and she's grown a bit more since then, but it was too precious to leave out. River also plays around with my roommate's dog, although sometimes we have to separate them for acting out too much. Can you believe this full-sized cat started out so small?

River is so cute. Reminds me of my two fur babies, Sam & Lucy, when they were orphaned (they are now 3 years old). Lots of hard work and sleeplessness, but it was worth it. I love them to pieces and wouldn't swap them for anything. I would gladly do it all over again.

River is so cute! I have an adopted kitty from the HS and she is now 14. My MIL has 5 cats. She has always cared for stray kittys in the neighbor. She takes them in for shots and has them fixed too. We call her the "Crazy Cat Lady" and she loves it :) Great page!

I take it that at some point River went from being a foster kitten to being a pet. She is adorable. I helped my daughter feed some baby kittens one summer, about six of them so it was a lot of work. I also used to raise bottle calves, so know well the experience of getting up in the middle of the night to make a bottle, and then having to go our to the corral to feed them. It was what made me decide to breastfeed my children, lol. I'll be watching for pictures as she grows up.

What a sweetie! I "fostered" some kittens that were buried by their mother. Only three of six made it the night we rescued them. I still have them ... 11 years later. I couldn't part with those kittens after we bonded, and they are so happy together. Congratulations on your 2010 Giant Squid Showcase honor.

River is so adorable. Tucker was weened when we found him, if he wasn't, we weened him real fast. He was extremely sick though and we almost thought we were going to lose the second stray kitteh that we had found in our lives.

FYI, you may want to resize your photos so your lens doesn't jump around when people get to the bottom.
