Orthopedic Cat Beds . . .
. . . and how they might be of benefit for your cat.
Cats love sleeping, sometimes it seems like a cat is willing to sleep at any time in any place. In fact it is part of a cat's nature to be able to enjoy many catnaps. This is a left over from the days when cats were out in the wild, it was too risky to take long deep sleeps, they had to be awake and alert in a split second to escape from predators.
What though of cats that have difficulty in enjoying restful sleep, perhaps because of arthritis, hip dyspepsia or simply through old age? It is in these situations that orthopedic cat beds can help as they provide additional support for the cat's joints and a more even distribution of the feline's weight. This typically results in peaceful and refreshing slumber for the cat.
A bonus is that an orthopedic bed will often resist cratering longer, therefor extending its useful life.
Memory foam is used for the base of many orthopedic cat beds. Memory foam is of 'open cell' design which means that it takes on the contours of your cat's body shape. This helps to reduce painful pressure points and contributes to restful and beneficial sleep for your cat.
Some ortho beds are flat mats with no raised sides; a cat with severe movement issues will find this style much easier to climb onto. There are others that have a large soft bolster around three of the sides to help guard against nasty drafts.

A Tip When Choosing An Orthopedic Bed For Your Cat.
Sometimes manufacturers are a little enthusiastic when describing sizes. Orthopedic cat beds described as 'small' can sometimes be very small indeed and 'medium' can turn out to be smallish. If you are unsure which size your cat needs, it may be better to go larger rather than smaller.Remember that, if your cat suffers from joint problems she, or he, may no longer be able to sleep curled up. Your cat may need to sleep lying straight out and if the orthopedic bed is too small it won't help much at all.

Orthopedic Cat Beds - A Little Exercise Might Help.
An arthritic cat should be persuaded to take a little moderate exercise each day. This will help to prevent her joints stiffening up to much and help prevent her putting on too much weight. A completely inactive cat is likely to pile on the pounds and that would mean increased pressure on her joints, (as well as other unwanted health problems.)
A little daily playtime with your cat should give her joints the movement that they need. The play must be gentle; nothing too strenuous, an arthritic cat will likely need loving encouragement to move at all, it is not necessary for her to run around the room, just being a little mobile will help her.
Younger Cats?
What about younger, fitter cats can they enjoy the comfort of orthopedic cat beds too? Of course they can. If you want to give your younger cat the luxury of a really comfortable place to sleep then one of these beds would fit the bill.
There is no guarantee though that just because your cat has her own comfy sleeping place, she won't still snooze on the couch or slumber on your bed (because cats are cats!), but it is worth a try. Just imagine . . . if your cat does take to her quality bed it will mean less hairs deposited on your furniture.
