I still have mixed feelings on the assassination of Bin Laden but we absolutely made the right decision in the way we handled his burial rights. If we had done anything else we'd only have continued to fan the flames of US resentment and drive more moderate on the edge of radical Muslims firmly into the radicalized camp.

Well done. Great source of information here. Lots to see and so little time. I hadn't heard of that book before, interesting. I think discovery had a show the other night about the details, shocking really.

Very good lens, well done. I don't know if the wool is being pulled over our eyes. Everyone believes conspiracy is in every corner these days. It is appalling that trust of anyone and anything has gone out the window. Well it doesn't matter, with the information available to you, this is a wonderful job and I certainly commend you. See you around the galaxy...

My personal observation; which you're not obliged to share, on this is that Bin Laden died long ago from some sickness or so, and that the US kept his death secret so that they could use the info for some very specific purpose.

For a financial French newspaper, for example, "the legal limit of US debt would have been reached on 16 May 2011" which means that Obama had to make this announcement otherwise the "US would have face a financial Armageddon" (still cited from the Expansion newspaper, published on 4 May 2011).

Well, in my opinion, and because I've read something similar regarding the US debt in March 2010, I tend to believe this version of the story. You know, their debt is so big that their country isn't theirs any more. Can you imagine their creditors ask them to pay the bill? Ot speculators stop trusting in the US? This would translate into the end of this country.

Once again, we get back to propaganda. And these last two or three years, in our own countries, American propaganda as been quite active. This certainly is useful for some... sadly, not for the average citizens. I don't believe in all what Americans claim. I only believe in logic and reasoning.

Other than that, the work done on this page is huge and excellent. As usual.

Are you sure you have all the facts and have not been influenced by American propaganda? And I hope you didn't dance in the streets like so many in the U.S. Twitter and Facebook have been infiltrated by bots. If someone says he's IT but taking a break in Afghanistan ~ is he really, or just saying it? Go deeper.
  • aj2008 May 7, 2011 @ 2:36 am | delete
No, I do not have all the facts, no one has all the facts bar a handful of people. However, I would not say I have been directly influenced by American propaganda as I did most of my research on British websites, including the BBC - but perhaps THEY have been influenced by American propaganda? I hope not.

This page was never intended to debate the facts, or to analyse the deeper motivations of Bin Laden and the Governments who fought him but was actually intended to be more of a Biography. This is why I have steered clear of voicing any personal opinions other than to state that Bin Laden committed atrocities and acts of terrorism and I think the majority of people would agree with that. Unless of course they were supporters of Bin Laden in which case they would refer to him as a freedom fighter and give him other labels to justify his thinking and his actions.

Those who know me both on and offline would know that this is definitely not an event, where I would have been dancing in the streets - personally I do feel uncomfortable about what happened and to be honest I don't think we will ever know the full story.

But as I said, this page was intended to be a biography not a debate - that's not to say I wont start a debate on another page, but I wanted to think things through first to decide my approach while we watch as more news (maybe propaganda, who knows) filters through, so it could be a page where the arguments on both sides could be presented in a measured way, rather than as an immediate and ill-prepared response before the views and statements of influential people and leaders had been heard.

And from the way the American Government keep changing what they say happened, I feel that this is probably the best approach.

Great work here! My congratulations on a Lens well made. Made me more informed.
Still, on the topic of the Lens, I wonder were this will go... and not wanting to be sarcastic, but it would be nice to have some prof of his death...guess the "funeral at sea" took care of that....
  • jamesnodturft May 5, 2011 @ 1:01 pm | delete
Well done. I think the collection of biographical data has real value.
  • Spook May 4, 2011 @ 4:24 pm | delete
It's a funny thing about terrorism, it depends where your premises lie? I lived through all of this when we were the only people in the world fighting it and everybody despised us for it. Now it has come to them, suddenly the ball game has changed?
  • aj2008 May 5, 2011 @ 6:21 am | delete
I have deliberately not expressed any views on this lens, because I intended it to be a Biography and "news" report rather than a debate about Bin Laden and his beliefs. But it does seem to me that as you feel so strongly then maybe you could make a debate lens, where this sort of discussion could take place?
  • kimmanleyort May 4, 2011 @ 6:41 am | delete
Really well put together, balanced and objective. I learned new things about bin Laden.

Wow AJ - This is a fantastic piece of "ART" as Seth would call it!! Blessed!
  • nightbear May 4, 2011 @ 1:04 am | delete
What an incredible job you've done. If anyone was confused by this whole piece of history they would get the entire story clearly explained right here. Blessed!

Nice job. I have been on Alerts while in the U.S. Army in Germany due to Bin Laden.

Dear AJ, A stunning account of the details herein. I have lensrolled this to my impromptu (less factual, more emotional) lens titled 'Osama bin Laden is no longer.' However, with your express permission, I would like to feature yours as the full, more detailed account on my lens. Please let me know on my Bio page if this would be okay with you. Most respectfully, Rose

AJ you have done a wonderful job pulling together the important facts and more about Osama Bin Laden...and all on one page. Much of this I did not know and I had missed the President's speech the other night...thanks for including it here. *Blessed

Excellent job bringing this information. We never actually rejoice over someone's death, but we can certainly say that Osama bin Laden will not be missed.
  • CruiseReady May 2, 2011 @ 3:39 pm | delete
    Nice treatment of the subject
  • Ramkitten May 2, 2011 @ 3:36 pm | delete
There was so much here that I didn't know about Bin Laden. I'd never actually bothered to try to find out the background on this guy, beyond the snippets I'd hear now and then on the news. Really interesting.
