Oscar Fish Introduction

Basic Information on Oscar Fish

Oscars are very intelligent fish and they have the ability to recognise their owners. This species of fish is actually more like a dog as they are always on the lookout for food, but do not be tempted to feed them more than once a day. Also make sure you only feed the right amount according to the fishes requirements. Overfeeding your fish can cause poor water quality which will result in diseases such as the dreaded hole in the head disease.

Oscar fish grow very quickly when cared for correctly and so it is the fish keepers responsibility to make sure the fish is accommodated properly. Oscars require large fish tanks, I recommend a 4 ft fish tank as the minimum size. If you want to keep Oscars happy and decrease the amount of time spent on tank maintenance, the you should consider a larger fish tank such as a 5 or 6 ft tank.

Other tank furnishings will make the tank attractive such as a sunken ship or a castle, but make sure the ornament is safe for your fish and that it has not sharp edges that could harm your pet. Do not spend a lot of time arranging the tank because if the Oscar fish feels that tank needs to be arranged then he or she will quite happily move objects and uproot plants.

Oscars are naturally aggressive fish which makes it the best option to keep them alone or with other fish that will either be hardy and tolerate the aggressiveness or fish that will retreat and not bother the Oscar. The type of personality will differ from fish to fish and so while a certain Oscar might fight a tank mate another Oscar might ignore the other fish and live happily. Most experienced Oscar fish keepers will say that Large Plecostomus are the best tank mates for Oscars and this is correct. Plecostomus are a species of catfish that eat algae off the glass of the fish tank as well as scavenging for left over's and uneaten food. They are docile and will hide if bullied by other fish.

If you are thinking about getting an Oscar then I highly recommend Oscar Fish Secrets.
