Best Picture Oscars of the 80s

There were some great 80s movies ranging from John Hughes' teen movies like Sixteen Candles and the Breakfast Club to the introduction of Freddy Kruger in the Nightmare on Elm Street movies. Top Gun was a huge commercial hit as was the Karate Kid and who can forget the dance movies - Flashdance, Fame and Dirty Dancing.

Indiana Jones burst onto our screen making a star of Harrison Ford and E.T. brought Drew Barrymore to our attention. Vietnam movies were also big during the 80s with titles such as Platoon and Good Morning Vietnam. Let us not forget the bumbling Police Academy movies and who are you gonna call when things go boo in the night? Ghostbusters!

This lens is all about the movies that managed to win Best Picture at the Oscars throughout the 80s and it includes some real classics like Rain Man, Ghandi and Terms of Endearment. I won't ruin it for you let's just say

"and the Oscar goes to......................................" (drumroll)
Revisit the eighties by watching these movies again. With the Samsung 46 inch LCD HDTV you can watch them in style - popcorn anyone???

Ordinary People

Ordinary People

Best Picture 1980

Ordinary People was Robert Redford's directorial debut and is a movie that is about 'ordinary people' tackling the agony of depression and how it affects the whole family. This isn't sugar coated as some Hollywood productions tend to be and there isn't a convenient solution to depression gift wrapped before the end of the movie.

The Jarretts are a middle class family played by Donald Sutherland (father), Mary Tyler Moore (mother) and Timothy Hutton (son, Conrad). The Jarret's son Buck has died and Conrad has tried to commit suicide while mom's idea is to make sure that the world sees they are all doing fine. This highlights how there is no easy way out of problems and how easy it is for family members to misunderstand each other and the problems this can cause.

A story of envy and anger this movie is about Mozart's life and the rivalry between himself and the official Royal Composer for the Austrian court - Antonio Salieri. Enter Robert Redford as English adventurer Denys Finch Hatton. I know Robert Redford was a heartthrob, but why didn't they cast an English actor in this role? He plays his part well, but he is not a convincing Englishman.
The chemistry between Streep and Redford combined with the beautiful images of Africa makes this a must watch movie.
