Ostara -- The Spring Equinox

Celebrating Spring

The warmth in the air and that sweet fresh smell in the breeze reminds us that Spring will soon make its welcome appearance. Spring brings renewal and fertility to the Earth, breaking frigid Winter's grip with a burst of new birth.

Many cultures have special celebrations to mark this joyous transition between seasons. In Wicca, we celebrate with the holiday Ostara at the time of the vernal equinox, usually around March 21st. .

Vernal Equinoix

"The moment at which the sun passes through the vernal equinox, about March 21, marking the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere."

Countdown to Ostara

Ostara: March 20, 2012

Celebrate Spring with Eggs

easter-eggEggs have long been associated with fertility so it is natural that eggs have a place in Spring celebrations. The history of dying eggs dates back to ancient pagan times. Eggs were decorated and then gifted to friends and family to encourage fertility in the coming year.

Egg hunts, too, have pagan origins. When the early Church clashed with pagans, the tradition of giving eggs went underground. Pagans instead hid the decorated eggs for their like-minded friends and neighbors to find.

For a simple Ostara ritual, dye an egg with a light shade of yellow, green or pink. Light a candle, again using the colors of yellow, green or pink, and hold the egg in both your hands. Spend some time thinking about what you want reborn in your life in the coming year.

Decorate Your Home for Ostara

Fill your house with fresh flowers and use them on your altar.

Spring Bunny

The March Hare

easter-bunnyBunnies draw their association with Spring from the March hare. After a long winter's rest, the March hare literally springs into action busily breeding during the month of March. The bunny's association with fertility make it an important symbol in the nature-based practice of Wicca.

While having a live bunny in the house is not practical for most, you can still get into the cute and fuzzy Ostara cuteness of bunnies. Decorate with the stuffed animal version of this symbol of Spring to bring Ostara into your home.

Ostara -- Time for New Beginnings

Spring is the time to begin anew

Ostara-spring-sunflowerSpring symbolizes a new start and your Ostara ritual can reflect that. Use the outdoors and a simple spell to harness the power of Ostara for a new project. Gather paper, a pen, a spade and any other ritual elements you care to use and arrange them in a good spot outside. Cast your circle and do your normal preliminaries. Then bless your pen and paper. Use them to write down your hopes and aspirations for a new project in your life. When you are finished, fold the paper in half three times. Finally, dig a small hole and bury the paper in the earth. Just as seeds grow in the ground, sowing your wishes and hopes during Ostara will result in a crop of success.

I used to drive my co-workers nuts. I had a branch in my cubicle that I would decorate with hanging items depending on the season. Early in March I would hang eggs and bunnies on it. This confused people, because Easter is usually in April. Most people also knew of my paganism but were afraid to mention it. So they would walk by the cube and look in, and keep on walking. A few brave souls would say, what a cute Easter tree, to which I would say, it's not Easter, it's Ostara, the Spring Equinox. Which only left them more confused.

It's interesting to see how some of these symbols of spring have been incorporated into standard religions even though the roots go back to pagan traditions.

This reminded me of how once on Easter my boss at the time was Wiccan and she came into work with these Easter eggs covered in Wiccan symbols and at first it really startled me...but then I realized it made more sense for her to have eggs like this than for me to have "Easter eggs" since it's originally a pagan tradition anyway. :)
And...oh my gosh that stuffed animal "Bunnies by the Bay Wee Plush, Petal" you have listed is sooooo cute!
