Ostomy Care - Securicare

A stoma is created by an operation, which brings the end of the intestine to an opening on the abdominal wall. Bodily wastes are then excreted and collected into an ostomy appliance which is attached to the area around the stoma. There are many kinds of pouches for use with an ostomy. With time, you can decide what type works best for you. You will need to empty the pouch 4 to 6 times a day if you have an ileostomy, and 1 or more times a day if you have a colostomy. For both types, you'll need to change the pouch every 4 to 6 days, and clean it if you reuse it. To make the most of Ostomy Care you will also have to care for the stoma and the skin around it.

Ostomy Care - Before

About before the surgery

Ostomy Care Nurse

Before surgery, the surgeon will introduce the patient to a specialist Ostomy Care Nurse who will discuss the surgery in more detail and find out as much as possible about the patient's lifestyle needs. From this discussion, the Ostomy Care Nurse will be able to decide the best position for the stoma (siting) and will mark this on the patient's abdomen so that the surgeon can see where to form the stoma. They will also be available to discuss any concerns and answer any other questions.

Ostomy Care - After

About after the surgery

Ostomy Care Nurse - After Surgery

Following surgery, the bowel may take a while to start working again as it will be handled during the operation. Patients should gradually start eating and drinking over a period of a few days to allow the bowel to adjust. It should start making sounds after about two to three days and patients will start having motions after about four to five days.

The patient's bowel motions may also vary in colour and consistency for a while after surgery. Again, this is normal but if the patient is worried they can discuss it with their Ostomy Care Nurse. If the patient has had a urostomy, often the surgeon will place a tube (stent) that will come out of the stoma and drain urine. The stent will enable urine to flow immediately after surgery. Pain control will be discussed with the patient prior to surgery. If the patient experiences pain, it is important for them to let their doctor or Ostomy Care Nurse know straight away.

During the patient's time in hospital, they will be taught how to care for their stoma. They should be given enough products to allow them to experiment with and find out what works for them. If they or their family are having any difficulties with the equipment, the Ostomy Care Nurse is there to help them.
