Capital City of CANADA

Here on this valuable page you will find a wealth of information about Ottawa.

On Dec. 31, 1857, Queen Victoria chose Ottawa as the nation's capital, much to the annoyance of Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City and even Kingston, Ontario.

Canada's first governor general, Sir Charles Stanley Monck, called the choice a seeming act of insanity. YIKES!

Please read on...

City of Ottawa

Great CITY of the world!

Ottawa is my home town. I cannot imagine living anywhere else on earth! On this page I will provide the most interesting links and timely information about Ottawa.

We are situated in the Eastern Time Zone half way between the north pole and the equator, yup, it's true, we are at 45 degrees north latitude. Which is probably why we have four well defined seasons. Summers are really brief here when you think about it. The leaves only come on the trees May 6,7 and 8th or so. Then by the 3rd week of September, the leaves leave us.

A century and a half ago, Queen Victoria accepted the recommendation of her senior officials and chose Ottawa as Canada's seat of government. That historic decision shaped the development of the Capital region and influenced the evolution of Canada as a nation. Please see the beautiful video I posted about the celebration of this event.

Ottawa doesn't have special "district" status like Washington DC. However we have the NCC (National Capital Commission). The NCC is a Crown corporation that was created by Parliament in 1959 as the manager of federal lands and buildings in the National Capital Region, with a mandate and mission to build the Capital region into a source of pride and unity for all Canadians. They have a ridiculously high budget (thank you rest of Canada)!

Ottawa has a very stable economy because the two main employers are huge. About 80,000 work for the feds, and another 80,000 work in high-tech. However, this latest global economic slump is bound to affect us no matter what. However, so far we are weathering the storm quite well, amazing.

Anyway, we are so fortunate here to live here in the Capital City. Two hundred years or so ago Ottawa was basically just a lumber town. They would float the bountiful supply of logs down the Ottawa River to Montreal. The demand for lumber grew in leaps and bounds. So did the region. So imagine if this city had not been chosen as the capital city -OMG.

QUICK FACTS

Capital of CANADA!

SquidWords.com

Important basic information about the City of OTTAWA:

  • The Ottawa Region, with 1,148,800 million (latest stats) residents, is the fourth-largest urban area in Canada.
  • Slightly more than half of the residents of the Ottawa Region speak English as their first language, close to one-third speak French as well, and almost one-fifth have other ethnic backgrounds, endowing the region with a vibrant tapestry of culture and cuisine.
  • The major local industries are advanced technology, tourism, retail and services. Ottawa has been ranked sixth in the world in terms of quality of life. This rating is based on many factors, including low crime rates, environmental cleanliness, public services, political stability, and socio-economic conditions.
  • The current mayor of Ottawa is Larry O'Brien, who succeeded Bob Chiarelli on December 1, 2006.
  • There is no federal capital district in Canada. Ottawa is a municipality within the Province of Ontario. Although it does not constitute a separate administrative district, Ottawa is part of the federally-designated National Capital Region, which includes the neighbouring Quebec municipality of Gatineau.
  • Ottawa has a humid continental climate with a range of temperatures from a record high of 37.8 °C (100 °F) in the summers of 1986 and 2001, to a record low of -38.9 °C (-38 °F) being recorded on December 29, 1933, the third coldest temperature recorded in a capital city (after Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia and Moscow, Russia).
  • Snow and ice are dominant during the winter season. Ottawa receives about 235 cm (93 in) of snowfall annually. This is one of the world's coldest capitals, with mean January temperatures of -10.7º Celsius.
  • Ottawa sits at the confluence of three major rivers: the Ottawa River, the Gatineau River and the Rideau River. The Ottawa and Gatineau rivers were historically important in the logging and lumber industries, and the Rideau as part of the Rideau Canal system connecting the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence River with the Ottawa River.
  • The Rideau Canal (built through the wilderness from 1826 to 1832 to link Ottawa to the Great Lakes) was one of the great engineering feats of the 19th century. In winter, a section of the Canal (7.8 kilometres) becomes the world's largest skating rink. (Winnipeg now has the honor of the longest skating rink)!
  • Canada's Capital Region has the highest concentration of museums of any region in Canada. You'll also find the longest network of recreational pathways of any North American city.

All about OTTAWA, CANADA

Ottawa ( or sometimes ) is the capital of Canada and a municipality within the Province of Ontario. Located in the Ottawa Valley in the eastern portion of Southern Ontario, the city lies on the southern banks of the Ottawa River, a major waterway forming the local boundary between the Provinces of Ontario and Quebec.

The 2006 Census recorded the population at over 812,000, making it the fourth largest municipality in the country and second largest in Ontario. Connected by several bridges to its Quebec neighbour, the City of Gatineau on the northern shores of the Ottawa River, the two cities had a combined 2006 population of over 1,130,000, making it the country's fourth largest metropolitan area.

Ottawa is governed by a 24-member city council consisting of 23 councillors each representing one ward and the mayor, currently Larry O'Brien,http://www.ottawa.ca/city_hall/mayor_council/mayor/index_en.html elected at-large. As a single tier municipality, Ottawa has responsibility for all municipal services, including fire, ambulance, police, parks, roads, sidewalks, public transit, drinking water, stormwater, sanitary sewage and solid waste.

There is no federal capital district in Canada. Although it does not constitute a separate administrative district, Ottawa is part of the federally designated National Capital Region (NCR), which encompasses Ottawa, Gatineau and surroundings areas having a population of over 1,451,000. The National Capital Commission is a federal crown corporation charged with the responsibility of plannng and managing the federal government's interests in the NCR.

As with other national capitals, the word "Ottawa" is also used to refer by metonymy to the country's federal government, especially as opposed to provincial or municipal authorities.

MOVIE FILMED in the City of OTTAWA!

This is VHS, but still worth it.

This movie has something for everyone. Emily Mae Young is perfect as a little girl who is forced to temporarily live with her mother's ex-boyfriend (who turns out to be her father). Dean Winters is amazing, and the rest of the cast pulls of performaces worthy of this film.

The little girl playing matchmaker is what makes the film so special, as the antics she will do and the things that she will say in order to see that it happens her way. This movie is something for everyone, and nothing in this movie is disappointing, nothing.

Excellent movie

A lovely part of Ottawa's History

During World War II, the Dutch royal family took refuge in Ottawa, Canada.

Queen Juliana was VERY pregnant. To ensure that the baby would have Dutch citizenship, the Queen's room (Ottawa Civic Hospital) was proclaimed to be a part of the Netherlands. Cool!

In 1945, Queen Juliana made a gift of 100,000 tulip bulbs to show her appreciation and gratitude for both the hospitality of the people of Ottawa, and the role that Canadian soldiers played in liberating th Netherlands.

To this very day, the capital receives 20,000 tulip bulbs every year!

This unique story of international friendship inspired the creation of the Canadian Tulip Festival.
