Chihuahua: Runt of the Litter to Ruler of the House

Meet Rosie! The Sweetest & Bossiest Chihuahua in Town!
You know Chihuahuas are the smallest of all dog breeds. Now imagine the smallest of the smallest. Rosie was the runt of the litter. A teeny tiny bit of fur with a little bitty nose and the cutest little wiggle-waggle tail. All eyes and ears, she looked like a mouse. We dared not put her on the floor and walk off. The poor baby would surely be stepped on by someone and flattened like a pancake. Being the smallest of the litter, Rosie apparently wasn't formed perfectly. Her little head, legs and tail didn't match her tongue and main body. With a bit of a chunky butt that wiggles when she walks, and a tongue that can give kisses quicker than you can blink, she is the apple of my eye. For her first year, she was so small that there were no dog clothes on the market that would fit her. She just walked right out of them. Not wanting her to freeze, I got busy and made her some sweaters. By now she has out grown them and I gave them all to the youngest granddaughter, Danielle, for her doll babies to wear.
By the next season, her little body outgrew her extra-small hoodies I had purchased but she was still a short-legged little critter. Her adopted brother, Spanky our Papillon, has some size small hoodies which he shares with her now. He's a small breed also, but compared to Rosie, he's a long-legged thing that can jump 3 feet straight up in the air. She can jump about 1 inch straight up. Her litter mate brother, Doodles, is a perfectly formed muscular example of a perfectly handsome little Chihuahua. He and Spanky are both lucky that they are good jumpers, 'cause Rosie rules the roost and she will bite their tails if they don't toe the mark. My son, Nick, belongs to Doodles. They are over-the-road truckers and are the closest of family to each other. Sometimes we get to have Doodles over and these three dogs do love to play together. It's 90-miles-a second through the house: around the living room, down the hallway, under the bed, back out and back up the hallway, into the kitchen, across my lap and around again, and again, and again. After about five trips around, they're ready to slow down. Poor Rosie can't jump up on the bed or up on the couch. When the two boys realize she's stuck on the floor, they jump back down and play some more.

Rosie's Baby Photographs
About 10 Weeks of Age to 3 Months
She likes my built-in "perch." Gets her up high enough to see out the car window.
Rosie loves her toys.
Stuffed animals are a favorite.
We keep a small basket in the living room for the dog's toys. Rosie likes to drag them out, but I have yet to get her to put the toys back. Actually her favorite toys are my flip flops. When she can't get away with one of them, she likes Steve's old sock with a knot tied in the middle. Next on her list are stuffed animals. Here's a handful of good toys that are much better than an old shoe or sock for Rosie and for your small dogs.

Chihuahua at the office
When Rosie first came to us, I had just gotten out of the hospital from having surgery. Fortunately we got to have a little bonding time. When I did go back to work, I took her with me for the first two months. I was really hoping she would be able to come with me forever, but the boss was afraid the others at the office would want to bring their pets to work, too. So I was lucky to get to have her with me the first two months while she grew a little and got used to living with Steve and me and Spanky. Rosie was a big hit at the office. The boss even got down on the floor with her. (I've got photos for proof. He's really a nice guy underneath the boss persona.)
Wake-up, Little Rosie, Wake-up
Rosie sleeps with me and Spanky sleeps with Steve. Yes, we have our own rooms with our own beds. Steve and I are old enough now that we have different mattress needs, different sleeping habits, and different aches and pains, that it just works more comfortably that way. So, now, what was I saying...oh, yes, Rosie loves to snuggle up under the blanket. I turn the fan on and she crawls way down under the blanket. I'll sit and read for a little bit, then turn out the lamp and lay down. Within seconds, she is moving up to curl next to my stomach and we both fall asleep. In the morning, the radio alarm goes off and we wake up to music, which I think is the best way to wake up. We stretch a bit, then Rosie rolls on her back for a bit of a belly rub. This is the only time that she does this. During the day, when she wants a belly rub, she'll raise her front leg, but won't roll over. So I feel very special that we have those few moments together in the morning for her wake-up roll-over belly rub time. After a few minutes of special time together, I get up and go in search of coffee. Rosie tries to crawl back under the cover, but Spanky runs in, bounding onto the bed and insists that she get up. Steve has already been up for a little bit, so he always takes the dogs outside for their first early morning stroll.

Chi's are creatures of intelligence
Rosie is a very intelligent little creature, as are most Chihuahuas. She has her own ways of communicating with us and it's usually not too difficult to understand her. I know when she wants her blankie. She'll scratch at the couch a little bit. If I don't respond, she'll scratch more insistently. If I still ignore her (I'm usually on Squidoo and don't notice her right off), she flounces around and really scratches at the couch. I finally snap to what she's doing and get her blankie off the back of the couch. When I cover her with it, she lays down and goes right to sleep. Sometimes when I'm at work, Steve watches the television in his room. The dogs like to hang with him and when it's nap-time, Rosie gets him to come into the living room to get her blankie before she'll settle down to sleep.
Dog Food Debate
Homemade or Prepackaged
Lots of people have an opinion regarding the best food for their pet. Even those who don't have pets have their ideas of which is best. I am admitting that, Yes, there are some very good prepackaged dog food. That's not the point I'm making here. I want to know what you think is best for your pet.
Would you rather spend an hour or so every other week making your dog's food? Or, would you prefer to spend that time driving to the feed or grocery market to buy a bag of prepackaged food for your dog?
Sibling Rivalry
Is Rosie a "Teacup" Chihuahua?
Short answer: "No, she isn't."
It made me very unhappy to learn that there is no such critter as a "Teacup" Chihuahua. The Chihuahua is a miniature dog. There is no division. Some people are short people, some people are tall people, some people are medium sized people: there are no "teacup" people and there are no "teacup" Chihuahuas. Some Chi's are short, some are tall, some are medium. Period. Any of the Chihuahuas can fit in a teacup when first born. A baby mouse can fit in a teaspoon when first born, but there are no "Teaspoon" Mice being advertised. Hmmm, I wonder if there might be a good market for "Teaspoon Mice"? What do you think?
Doggie's Peanut Butter Treats Recipe
Most Dogs seem to like Peanut Butter.
- 1 Cup Boiling Water
- 1 Cube Beef or Chicken Bouillon
- 1/2 Cup Peanut Butter
- 2 Tablespoons Cooking Oil
- 1 1/2 Cup Flour
- 1 1/2 Cup Whole Wheat Flour
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Pour the hot water into a large bowl. Dissolve Bouillon Cube in the hot water. Add peanut butter and oil and stir. Mix in all the flours. When a stiff dough begins to form, smoosh it all together into a ball and knead for 2 or 3 minutes.
You can roll out the dough until it is about 1/4-inch thick and cut into small pieces. Or, like I do, just divide the dough into quarters, then divide those into quarters, repeat until pieces are about the size of a walnut. Place on a cookie sheet that has been sprayed with Pam and mash them into a flattened cookie shape.
Bake for 20 minutes. I left them in the oven with the fire turned out for about 30 more minutes so they would be dried out. This made a lot of little doggie cookies so I bagged a couple dozen in five snack-sized baggies and put all but one in the freezer for later.
Spanky doesn't have enough teeth to chew on these, but Rosie loves them. She hid hers and grabbed Spanky's cookie and ate it. Then went back and got hers. I told you she is intelligent.
Traveling in style is the only way to go.
Style and comfort - Very important considerations for your puppy.
Homemade Dog Food Recipe
Trying a new recipe
- Serves: 20 quarter-cup servings
- Prep Time: not too long
- Total Time: just long enough

For quite a while I've been concerned about the food our dogs eat. After doing some research, i became even more concerned. There are dog foods on the market that are just fine for the dogs. There are also some canned soups that are just fine; however, I started making my own soup which I freeze by the serving in freezer bags. And it tastes so much better than just fine...it is great! So, why not make my dogs' food myself.
From the research, I learned that the packaged dog food didn't come about until 1930. Up until then, dogs ate what their owners ate. Since there were no fast-food places back then, the food was mostly home cooked, and usually healthy. Dogs and wolves in the wild eat what they catch and kill. At least, I've never heard of a wolf or wild dog strolling into the market and buying a bag of dog food. I mean, they don't even have jobs.
Okay, so I looked and looked for dog food recipes. There are a lot of websites that talk about home made dog food, but I could only find a very small handful that actually had recipes. What I did find was very helpful though. I learned a basic formula to follow: 40% Protein, 30% Fruits/Vegetables, 30% Starches. Any smart person who happens to read this, please don't bother telling me this recipe doesn't fit the per-centages. I do care, but not right this minute. Right now, I'm just doing a trial run to see if Rosie and Spanky will even eat the food I cook for them. If they like it, then I'll torture my brain with coming up with correct amounts of this and that.
So, for now, let's take what I have and "Get 'er done!"
Two Days Later: Rosie and Spanky give their homemade dog food a big paws up! I was quite elated when Steve called me at work and told me the dogs ate their food right up and all gone. Cleaned their plates like good little doggies. I forgot to put the yogurt in. Just putting a teaspoon on their plate with their food. Spanky does not like yogurt, but Rosie will eat almost anything. I'll try mixing Spanky's yogurt into his portion tonight and see how that goes.
Ingredients
- Turkey - ground - cooked - 2 cups
- Rice - brown - 1 cup dry - cooked with 1 cup water
- Eggs - boiled - chopped - 2
- Carrots - baby food - 1 jar
- Green Beans - baby food - 1 jar
- Apple - baby food - 1 jar
- Yogurt - plain - 1/4 cup
Instructions
I used a 1/4 cup measure to scoop the food out of the pan and put onto the cookie sheet. After freezing, the individual servings can be bagged 2 to a bag in the snack-size baggies and returned to the freezer for storage. I figure even if I forget to take a bag out of the freezer and put in the refrigerator at night, we have the handy-dandy microwave for thawing them in the morning.
