Chihuahua: Runt of the Litter to Ruler of the House

We keep a small basket in the living room for the dog's toys. Rosie likes to drag them out, but I have yet to get her to put the toys back. Actually her favorite toys are my flip flops. When she can't get away with one of them, she likes Steve's old sock with a knot tied in the middle. Next on her list are stuffed animals. Here's a handful of good toys that are much better than an old shoe or sock for Rosie and for your small dogs.

When Rosie first came to us, I had just gotten out of the hospital from having surgery. Fortunately we got to have a little bonding time. When I did go back to work, I took her with me for the first two months. I was really hoping she would be able to come with me forever, but the boss was afraid the others at the office would want to bring their pets to work, too. So I was lucky to get to have her with me the first two months while she grew a little and got used to living with Steve and me and Spanky. Rosie was a big hit at the office. The boss even got down on the floor with her. (I've got photos for proof. He's really a nice guy underneath the boss persona.)

Rosie sleeps with me and Spanky sleeps with Steve. Yes, we have our own rooms with our own beds. Steve and I are old enough now that we have different mattress needs, different sleeping habits, and different aches and pains, that it just works more comfortably that way. So, now, what was I saying...oh, yes, Rosie loves to snuggle up under the blanket. I turn the fan on and she crawls way down under the blanket. I'll sit and read for a little bit, then turn out the lamp and lay down. Within seconds, she is moving up to curl next to my stomach and we both fall asleep. In the morning, the radio alarm goes off and we wake up to music, which I think is the best way to wake up. We stretch a bit, then Rosie rolls on her back for a bit of a belly rub. This is the only time that she does this. During the day, when she wants a belly rub, she'll raise her front leg, but won't roll over. So I feel very special that we have those few moments together in the morning for her wake-up roll-over belly rub time. After a few minutes of special time together, I get up and go in search of coffee. Rosie tries to crawl back under the cover, but Spanky runs in, bounding onto the bed and insists that she get up. Steve has already been up for a little bit, so he always takes the dogs outside for their first early morning stroll.

Rosie is a very intelligent little creature, as are most Chihuahuas. She has her own ways of communicating with us and it's usually not too difficult to understand her. I know when she wants her blankie. She'll scratch at the couch a little bit. If I don't respond, she'll scratch more insistently. If I still ignore her (I'm usually on Squidoo and don't notice her right off), she flounces around and really scratches at the couch. I finally snap to what she's doing and get her blankie off the back of the couch. When I cover her with it, she lays down and goes right to sleep. Sometimes when I'm at work, Steve watches the television in his room. The dogs like to hang with him and when it's nap-time, Rosie gets him to come into the living room to get her blankie before she'll settle down to sleep.

A Surround Play Safe Play Yard is an excellent idea for the small dog like Rosie. This is portable which makes it good not only for the back yard but also for the park or the lake.

It made me very unhappy to learn that there is no such critter as a "Teacup" Chihuahua. The Chihuahua is a miniature dog. There is no division. Some people are short people, some people are tall people, some people are medium sized people: there are no "teacup" people and there are no "teacup" Chihuahuas. Some Chi's are short, some are tall, some are medium. Period. Any of the Chihuahuas can fit in a teacup when first born. A baby mouse can fit in a teaspoon when first born, but there are no "Teaspoon" Mice being advertised. Hmmm, I wonder if there might be a good market for "Teaspoon Mice"? What do you think?

• 1 Cup Boiling Water
• 1 Cube Beef or Chicken Bouillon
• 1/2 Cup Peanut Butter
• 2 Tablespoons Cooking Oil
• 1 1/2 Cup Flour
• 1 1/2 Cup Whole Wheat Flour

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Pour the hot water into a large bowl. Dissolve Bouillon Cube in the hot water. Add peanut butter and oil and stir. Mix in all the flours. When a stiff dough begins to form, smoosh it all together into a ball and knead for 2 or 3 minutes.

You can roll out the dough until it is about 1/4-inch thick and cut into small pieces. Or, like I do, just divide the dough into quarters, then divide those into quarters, repeat until pieces are about the size of a walnut. Place on a cookie sheet that has been sprayed with Pam and mash them into a flattened cookie shape.

Bake for 20 minutes. I left them in the oven with the fire turned out for about 30 more minutes so they would be dried out. This made a lot of little doggie cookies so I bagged a couple dozen in five snack-sized baggies and put all but one in the freezer for later.

Spanky doesn't have enough teeth to chew on these, but Rosie loves them. She hid hers and grabbed Spanky's cookie and ate it. Then went back and got hers. I told you she is intelligent.
