Our Pictures from Home

I thought I would share a few pictures of where we live. Spanish, Ontario is a very tiny community in northeastern Ontario.  The town is on the Trans Canada Highway between Sault Ste Marie and Sudbury.  We are located right on the North Channel of Lake Huron. It's a friendly, peaceful little town with beautiful surroundings. It was so hard to pick just a few, I hope you enjoy these.

Winter Morning Sunrise

We have many crisp winter mornings like this one, and what a view to wake up to! Although I am not to thrilled with the snow and cold, this makes up for it a little bit. This picture was taken from our front porch.

Summer Rainbows

I often wonder about the possibilities of finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow after a summer thunderstorm. Never found one yet! LOL This picture was taken just across the street from us. And I love when we get those double rainbows!

Summer Sunsets

What can I say, it just doesn't get any better than this! We have many evening sunsets just like this one. We get the typical pinks, blues and purples, but love the red ones best. This picture was take from our front yard.

A Beautiful Fall Sunset

With the start of each fall, the migratory birds start to arrive. We are on a pretty busy flyway and see hundreds of ducks and geese at one time! Flocks of geese actually fly right over the house, and I mean right over! They fly so close I sometimes feel like I can almost touch them!

Summer's Night Moon

On warm summer nights, we often sit outside gazing up at the sky full of stars or beautiful northern light displays. We love watching the skies, what a wonderful way to relax and end the day. I kind of feel sorry for the folks living in those big cities with all them lights, they just don't get to enjoy the night skies like we do! This picture is one Rick took of a full moon with his camera through a telescope.

Our Municipal Marina

We have a nice Municipal Marina here, which includes the Lookout Tower. A great way to get some exercise walking up (I need a few breaks LOL). The views once up there are breathtaking. These pictures were taken this spring.

That's a long way down! See the wee person way down on the ground?

This is looking west, towards various channels and small islands, which eventually heads out to the big water (Lake Huron).

This is looking south, across from the Marina, the delta area.

This is looking east, and is the mouth of the Spanish River. This is where we head up to go fishing.

Awesome Fishing

I just love having my own personal guide! And he even puts the worms and minnows on for me LOL. This was a quick evening fishing trip. We don't have big ones, but we have lots.

Rick actually is a guide here, and he really enjoys it. His clients love him, not only does he show them where to catch the fish, but also how to catch them. It's an art here I tell ya! He is very outgoing and gives them a tour of the area while they are fishing, pointing out wildlife and giving them a history of the area. He really is a people person.

Who's out Fishing with Us?

We never know who we will see out fishing either. This day was a moose, who had crossed one of the channels from one island to another. Sometimes it a bear or a deer swimming across.

We often see other little critters too; muskrats, otters and beavers. And I hate when I see snakes swimming in the water, but at least they are harmless! There always lots of birds flying around too; American Bald Eagles, Blue Herons, Loons, Hawks and so many more!

That ain't Yogi!

Out fishing one quiet August afternoon, and look who wants to join in? Or maybe he smelled all the fish we had caught!

* chuckle *

This was around a 2 or 3 year old bear.

Who's Dropping By

We often get critters dropping or going by our home. It can be a deer, bear or fox, or a family of racoons. This time it was a big mean old snapping turtle walking down the road by our laneway.

Feeding Chippy

We actually have three or four families of chipmunks that we feed and the one pictured here is so friendly. She's the mama from the first family we had, we call her .... Chippy LOL. She actually comes to the front door, wondering where her snacks are! LOL She has also been known to jump in the truck if we forget to close the door. I guess she wants to travel and see the world.

And when Rick calls her, she always comes running out of her hole to visit with him (doesn't for me LOL).

And sometimes, Rick is just too busy to hand feed her, so as he is reading up on some material, he puts out the "chippy buffet".

Groundhog Parents

We looked after this wee fellow that we rescued and took care of until we could release him back into the wild. We called him Starvin' Marvin. You can read all about our story on Spanish Joe's own Squidoo Lens.

And god love our mosquitoes and black flies here, we even look after those LOL ......

Bank Robbery in Spanish?

And even though we have a very small and quiet town, every so often reality sinks in. This is from a day-time bank robbery in the summer of 2006.

Geesh, same bank was robbed again on April 15, 2009!

Councillor Rick

Here was Rick being sworn in by our Mayor on January 4, 2007. Rick was a very active councillor and worked very hard for our town for four years (most folks here probably don't realize how hard he worked for them). I am so proud of him!

My Yucca

Me, I just usually kill things LOL. I don't have much luck with my gardening skills, I truly have a black thumb! But my Yucca never fails me, the bloom period, although short at only 4 weeks, is always worth it. That's my Purple Smoke Bush behind it.

This year, 2010, my Yucca didn't come up at all, and my Purple Smoke Bush looked half dead. I sure hope it was the weather this summer and not that my gardening skills are getting worse LOL

Community Involvement

We are as active as we can be in our community and are involved in several local groups. Here is a picture of me planting wild rice, a project we do through our local fish and game club.

This one is stocking walleye that the club raises, in one of our local inland lakes.

I hope to add more pictures later, so be sure to drop back.

This is just such sweetness...may you never stop wondering about gold at the end of the rainbow! I love how you sneak in your love and appreciation for Rick here...I'm sure you are the only one that truly knows how hard he worked as Mayor. This is done with so much love that I just have to bless again!

great pics. brought back many fond memories of Spanish as I grew up there. We used to live in the house that is now the bed and breakfast on the way down to the marina. Near the old extinct indian residential schools. Life was great then growing up in such a wonderful environment. We used to swim where the marina is now.
