Our Westie Dog

Ranked #4,728 in Pets & Animals, #117,809 overall

Our Westie's Name is Dudley

We did not name him. That is what his breeder named him. Well, that name fit him so we kept it.

Here is the story of how he came to be a part of our family. In the September of 2007 my husband said he had a surprise for me and my son. And he brought this dog home. He was about 7 months old. His birthday is February 23, 2007. He was so cute. My husband knew I had been wanting a dog about the size of a Westie with that type of fur. I am allergic to certain types of dogs and I know I can tolerate a Westie's fur. My mom has a terrier that is something like Toto from the Wizard of Oz and her fur does not bother me either.

Anyway, my husband got the dog from his boss. He breeds Westies and apparently they could not keep him to breed him--something to do with messing up the blood line. I have not earthly idea what that means... I guess my husband and his boss were talking one day about this pup that he needed to sell. My husband said well, my wife wants a dog like that...but I can't buy him. I guess he kept that in mind and within a week brought the dog to my husband and said we could have him. He told him he would take him back if I did not want him.

We would not trade him for the world! He is such a good dog. He was easily house broken and loves to play. My son who was 5 1/2 at the time was a bit mean to him at first and wanted to pull him here and there but now he is great with him and helps take care of him. I think they will be best buds as they both get older.

My mom and her dog, who is 16 years old, live with our family and I have to say having Dudley around has made her a little more spunky. He wants to play all the time and she is just not into that. It is funny watching them.

Dudley is also obsessed on playing with our cats which they of course are not too keen about. I will update this lens with more pics after I download them to my computer.

National Westie Rescue

A Message from the National Rescue Committee:

Every year, for a variety of reasons, Westies in this country find themselves in need of new homes. Sometimes they are lost, abandoned, or turned in to shelters. Sometimes owners must give up their dogs because of medical problems, moving into retirement homes, new baby, divorce, allergies, new house, nipping at the children, etc. And sometimes they are rescued from commercial breeding facilities, commonly referred to as "puppy mills".

Good breeders accept responsibility for the dogs they produce and will take them back at any stage of their life and make an effort to find a new suitable home for them. Irresponsible breeders fail to live up to their end of the bargain, don't care what happens to their puppies once they are sold, and will normally sell a puppy to anyone who has the money to pay for the puppy...little or no questions asked.
