Part 3 in our Unschooling Journey

Here we are to part 3 of our unschooling journey.
I'm not sure about it yet after 20 weeks of reporting!
I still call Jasmine over and do some work with her, as well as tell her what work I want done for the day...and keep on her until it's done.

I know this isn't true unschooling, but I am being more observant of just what she is doing that is educational. Not that I haven't always noticed this type of thing since the beginning of our homeschooling in 1989, but now I am actually trying to take notes during the week.

Summer is upon us with the public school out for this part 3 lens. I hope we find lots of great things to do over the summer.

Jasmine at the Kansas Cosmosphere

Week of May 17, 2009

This week Jasmine got started on a frog lapbook. She seems to be enjoying that and hopefully will have it done by the end of next week.

She's still been reading the anime chapter stories on the internet and is now writing her own manga.

I started her in a book called Will the Dollars Stretch? It will teach her in a fun way, I hope, through stories how to budget, write checks, balance the checkbook, etc.

My grandson brought home a small turtle from his dad's house so we had to do some research online on how to take care of it.

She attended Sunday school and church. It was the last week of Sunday school until public school starts up again.

She also did her own laundry this week and even folded it and put it away neatly!

She's always drawing, mostly anime type. I need to get some of them together and put in to her anime lapbook.

Week of May 24

This week was a good week, especially considering the public school is out for summer.

We worked some in the Will the Dollar Stretch? book.

Over the weekend we took a trip to a family reunion of my boyfriend. Since it was Memorial Day weekend we ran across a War Memorial set up. She really didn't have any choice but to listen as one of the gals started going over what all the items on display were.

She is still working on writing the manga chapter book online. She doesn't want me to read it. She is keeping track of how many hits each chapter is getting and telling everyone, as well as how many reviews she is getting.

She completed the Frogs Lapbook. I am including a photo of her working on it here but have added it to Jasmine's Lapbook Lens

Jasmine Working on the Frogs Lapbook

Week of May 31, 2009

Jasmine has spent the last week at the Kansas Bible Camp for grade school week.

At camp they attend chapel twice a day.
They swim each day.
They work on crafts...she brought home a picture frame and a plaque.
They have lots of group physical activities.

She goes again this next week for Middle School camp.

Week of June 7, 2009

Jasmine spent another week at the Kansas Bible Camp.

This week she only brought home 1 craft, which was a plaque. She said the craft time was full otherwise.

The usual things were done that I listed last week.
Last week I didn't know until Sunday, but they did a lot of science pertaining to water. She drew me a whole picture with explanation on Sunday. I will scan it when I can and add it to this lens.

This week they learned about the planets and space. She's been rattling off all kinds of facts since I picked her up last night. It's nice to know the knowledge stuck with her.

Jasmine Unpacking at the Kansas Bible Camp

Week of June 15, 2009

I don't have much to say this week. As Jasmine told me, "mom, it's summer." That is true, but learning is continuous.

This past week we have spent a lot of time at my boyfriends house as he bought a large pool. I'm including the photo here of Jasmine in the pool just as it was set up and we just started filling. (impatient is she LOL)

In other words, she has spent a lot of swimming time this past week. She also has been on her computer a lot. That I know of she is still reading the anime stories, but as far as writing her story, she says she hasn't worked on it because she has writer's block.
She's been looking up song lyrics. One whole evening she was looking at optical illusions.
Also she had an interest in the Mona Lisa so she did some research on it.

Week of June 21, 2009

Summer summer summer

We attended church Sunday morning.

She has swam 3 times this week.

This past week has been Bible school with our church. The theme was Veggie Tales, the pirates that don't do anything.
Jasmine dressed in her pirate outfit and she was the first mate for the games. I think she did an awesome job and put her all in to it. (I will have to look through my photos and find a good one of her in costume to share here)

She's been doing her usual reading online....she's had some story requests for her to write, but I'm not sure if she started any of them.

She's also been reading Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.

Week of June 28, 2009

We spent the last week at the Kansas Bible camp for family camp week.

This is the 5th summer we have gone.

Just as Jasmine's 2 weeks earlier we had 2 chapel times each day. We then had a quiz time each day on what was taught in the chapel lessons.

I didn't participate in any of the games.....Jasmine did in several of the games. They offered something both in the morning and the evening as far as games.

We spent lots of time in the nature center with the animals. I took a couple videos out there. I don't know how to share videos other than if they are on youtube unfortunately.

Each year there is some family activity. This year the theme was churches around the world. We were paired with another family and told to choose a country to research. We chose Bolivia since the family we were with have relatives that are missionaries there. It was interesting. We made up a flag of the country as well as a map. We studied info printed from wikipedia. We also had print outs from the couple that are missionaries.
Other countries that were done were the Caribbean, Peru, Bosnia, France, Romania and others that I can't think of right off hand.

We swam every day of the week, including at home both Friday evening and Saturday LOL

Walking....a lot of walking for exercise.

It was a good week away from it all...and learning the Word, but I am thankful to be home.

Week of July 5, 2009

I maybe shouldn't have continued these posts throughout the summer.

We've still been moving things this past week. Jasmine did make sure to get her books packed and her computer first thing.

She's still working on writing her chapter book. Her computer won't be online for awhile yet so about all she can do on it is listen to music and work on her story.

She's also been swimming...which is convenient when you have a pool in the back yard.

She has, however, made a comment about not looking forward to the school year starting again and "having" to do school work again each day.
Right now all of our school related books are in her back pack and in 2 milk crates.
My plan as far as the unschooling goes is to allow her to choose what she wants to do each day...but I do want to have set hours that she is doing just that.

Jasmine Impatient as We Just Start to Fill the Pool

Week of July 12, 2009

We attended church.

This past week was sewing club at church, which is from 10-3. Jasmine learned some about quilting....and our purpose of making the quilts to give to the Domestic Violence Center. Mostly she colored in quilt squares. We meet once a month. I've included a photo of her coloring.

She is still writing on her chapter story on her computer. Her computer is not connected to the internet yet so that is all she is doing on it.

She's been playing the Sims on the Playstation this week...being sure to tell me that it is "sort of" educational. You do have to watch how much you are making and how much you have to spend to furnish your home and such. It works for the summer I guess.

We didn't get in swimming but 2 times this week as the rest of the week it rained.

She got her box of magazine moved over here. (Seventeen and Wired) She has spent quite a bit of time this week reading what interested her in them. Once done with that she's been cutting out pictures from the magazines. She is planning a collage or 2 to hang on her bedroom wall once we get it fixed up for her to actually be able to stay in there.

Week of July 19, 2009

I can't think of a thing that Jasmine's done this week that was particularly educational and neither can she!

I know we attended church.

We've been able to get in the pool only a couple times this week because of the weather.

She's been playing the music channels on the tv. These have little tidbits of information on the top like how long Hershey's has been making Reese's peanut butter cups...or who has the record for eating the most hot dogs in the shortest amount of time. They are interesting facts.

She's still been playing the Sims on the Playstation.

She's not been on the computer too much this past week. When she was she was chatting with a friend and looking up lyrics and researching more on her favorite band right now, the Jonas Brothers.

She did go see the new Harry Potter movie at the theater last night after we ate out.

One more week and then it's August 1. That's when I will get out the crates of books and her backpack. Since she wants to unschool, I am going to let her look through the crates and decide (for the most part) what she wants to work on.

Week of July 26, 2009

This will be my last entry for this lens. I will start part 4 next week.

It's been a busy week around this house. We've had my boyfriend and his sister's nephews for the week. We also kept my grandson for the week for him to also have someone to play with.

We didn't get in the pool but twice this week due to the rains and chilly weather.

We took the boys to the Kansas Cosmophere. You can see my lens on it here if interested. Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center

We also went out to the Dillon's Nature Center. It had been so long since Jasmine had been there she thought she had never been there. That was the most learning for the week for sure. It was a nice walk through the trails and looking at the pond with all the turtles and ducks. The best part was all the hands on activities inside the building. I will be building a lens on it soon.

Otherwise, she's been doing a lot of research online, but mostly looking for song lyrics. She also did some fossil research. (she's explaining it all to me right now)

Next week we will be sorting through out educational materials. I always start school right around August 1st since that is the first fiscal day of the school year.
