The Life of Our Beloved Yorkie, Mitzy

Ranked #12,038 in Pets & Animals, #313,741 overall

Meet Mitzy! Our Yorkshire Terrier.

How we got our yorkie terrier. We visited a lady who had yorkie puppies. One puppy had a problem and was at a discount price. We didn't know how bad it was, but you couldn't tell that she had a cleft palate lip. You could barely see a small opening on one nostril and she was just the cutest thing. She was a fiesty little girl.

Where did we get our Yorkshire Terrier?

We got her from a friend's mom. She was raising a few yorkie's and dachshunds and we found out she had a Yorkie at a discount price ($200). She was worth way more than we paid. Her cleft palate was hardly noticeable and she had no problems eating or drinking. Her personality when we went to pick her up was curiosity and a bit shy.

Crate Training

We learned that crate training was a good idea. It took a year to potty train her, but I had no idea what I was doing. I wasn't very committed to it. I've since learned that a puppy can't hold it for more than 2-3 hours.

How did we come up with the name Mitzy?

I can't remember how we came up with the name Mitzy, but the meaning of Mitzy is "small" or "bitter". Small fits her and bitter was a not so often event. She didn't want small children around her, but was a perfect angel with adults. So that was the only thing, she picked her favorites and was loyal to us.

What was her favorite thing to play with?

Socks.

SOCKS are the best thing next to sliced bread! She'd pull, yank, growl, shake it and jump for it.

Her favorite things: SOCKS

Take off your sock and get ready to play!

Prissy, Fergie, Daisy and Rosco

Sharing the bed.

When she was a puppy she had to sleep in our bed. She would climb under the blankets to our feet. I don't know how she could breathe! But she wasn't fully potty trained yet so I had to start keeping her in a crate at night. So that was the end of our furry little friend sharing our bed. After she was potty trained about a year or two later she'd sleep under our bed. We got another dog a white schnauzer named Daisy, we put them both in the hallway with a gate. They were good company for each other and comfy in their dog pillow beds.

Dressed for Cold Weather

I dress her up much, but sometimes I would put a sweater or rain coat on her. Which she didn't like at all.

Pampered

Her first five years she was our baby. She would ride everywhere with us. Fishing, Camping, Boating, Christmas Trips etc. After having children she didn't get to ride so much with us, but she was still a pampered doggie!

Snow was not her favorite

Cat. Temporary Resident

A stray cat tried to make our porch her home, but Mitzy barked at it every time she saw it. This cat was a little stubborn. It was also a fighter. We fed it for a while, but went on vacation and it left and went elsewhere. The kids loved the cat, but the dogs couldn't have been happier.

Her hair. Long and Short.

Her hair shed some, but never tangled, if it ever tangles it was easily brushed out. It was so fine and pretty! She got a bath about once a month unless she got really dirty. When we were busy raising children it was sometimes more than a month. Those were the times she had short haircuts. Whenever I had time to take care of her hair I let it grow and it was so pretty. I decided in her last years that the schnauzer style cut was good for the top, although not as cute as having a hair bow on the head.

Two Friends: Daisy and Mitzy

This was rare. Mitzy liked her own space.

Growing Old Gracefully

Mitzy was slowing down a bit. Her hair remained shiny. She was still spunky.

How her last days were spent.

Around her 11th or 12th year she was losing her hearing. Her last couple of years she had no hearing at all. That did not stop her. She stayed active until about her last month (Sept 2010). She had begun to get an infection in a tooth which caused her to lose her appetite. Her body began to weaken. She was still eating, but then she lost all her jaw movement and couldn't drink water. I gave her water with an eyedropper for the last two days. We knew it was time to let her go (Oct 2010). She was very weak, in pain and could hardly stand by that time. We took her to our vet. It was the saddest day. We were miserable. It's gotten a little easier, but we miss her a lot. She was an awesome, protective, spunky, loving dog!

I love the memory of Mitsy and I loved Kirby, our mixed terrier we also had to let go. Kirby loved white socks too, but not to play with. Whenever my husband walked around in his white socks, Kirby would growl at him. It was hilarious and we never figured out why. Very inspiring lens, both emotionally and visually.

Hello from a Squidoo Greeter! I'm sorry for your loss of Mitzy, she looked like an adorable pet...I was a bit surprised to read that you actually had to Pay for Mitzy with a cleft palate lip...most breeders give them away or euthanize them because of a trait not wanted to be bred on...but the fact you did get her and give her a good home is absolutely wonderful!
