Using Prepared Foods as Part of a Weight Reduction Diet

Suggestions here should be useful for those who are dieting who do not have time to make and measure every meal from scratch. This is a recommendation list of specific branded food items.

If your goal is weight reduction or weight control, you likely are restricting portion size and restricting calories. If you are optimizing your plan, you are probably exercising regularly. Dieting effectively appears to have two elements: Will Power and Knowledge. If you have the willpower to abstain, you still need to know the calorie content of food items.

Avoiding inappropriate restaurant meals might be a start. One hamburger alone at some sit down restaurants can be 1200 calories. This won't work for someone on a 1500 a day calorie diet. If you try to make every meal at home from individual ingredients you run into some possible problems. You don't have time in your schedule, perhaps, to cook this way, and you end up with tempting leftovers. So sometimes it is desirable to use a few prepacked frozen meals that don't violate calorie/portion size requirements.

You can try these items without having to belong to a dieting program of the kind where you buy all your meals in bulk from one source, usually picked up as lots of little boxes in one big container.

Posted here are selections which the author found satisfying and convenient. There has been a tendency of late for big chains to eliminate some of their diet food in favor of putting the bigger calorie choices on the shelves. I saw my favorite sandwich wraps from South Beach disappear and the shelf space became occupied with prepackage lunch choices over 600 calories. This means that you are somewhat at the mercy of what others in your community want to eat unless you can get the store distributor to honor your requests. The sources I discuss here are standard supermarket chains, health food stores, Whole Foods, Stater Bros, and Trader Joe's. You might try the selections if you are coming off a commercial diet plan and have learned the principles of dieting.

Natural, gluten free, and GMO free labeling are indicated on some of these featured items. The secret is that you must always read labels and portion sizes and make sure the ingredients don't violate any particular medical diet prescribed by your own doctor.

You will need a measuring cup. I also find plastic silverware and some bowls to be useful when traveling as this gives me the option of selecting food from a grocery as well as from a restaurant. I can carry some dry items such as granola and buy some milk and yogurt.

Pushing Back on Obesity

Progress

"What's good for kids and families can also be good for business. We want parents to feel confident that enjoying a meal at a restaurant doesn't mean sacrificing their children's health."
from Michele Obama.

Let's Move is part of the initiative to reduce childhood obesity.

Some communities are looking closely at what is served in the school district cafeterias. Maybe the palate of the young can be trained away from salty and sugary foods. The Los Angeles Unified School District has been out in front in converting to new and healthier food offerings. They solicit taste tests and intend to monitor food that is scrapped to see which dishes are acceptable to the students. The kids do find the tamales acceptable. They are relying less on commodity foods from the government and more on fruits and vegetables produced within 200 miles.

The author of this lens does not often eat fast food. When she does, she selects the basic hamburger at McDonald's. She notices that there is a turkey Famous Star at Karl's. So there are more prudent choices for dieters at these popular restaurants.

Some chain restaurants are friendly to people trying to lower their body mass index. iHOP has a reduced calorie items on the menu. Mimi's has reduced calorie items on its menu. It is sometimes better when traveling to stop and eat a salad out of a grocery store than to have three big heavy meals a day in restaurants.

Some people may decide to not use Eating Out as a reward. Immoderate celebrations might contribute to their weight problems as they age. Something else such as concerts could be used to celebrate family milestones.
