Outdated Drivers

Cause and Consequence

Your personal computer is just like you. It has both mind (software) and body (hardware). Just like you, it needs the mind to communicate effectively with the body. This is where drivers come in. Drivers are programs that make sure your computer's software and hardware understand each other. These programs serve as translators for the software's commands so that your hardware can perform it, whether it is printing out that office document you need, playing that new song you like or even something as simple as displaying what you're looking at on your monitor.

Unfortunately, these drivers don't automatically change as your computer changes. As you install programs, upgrade your operating system and add new hardware, these drivers become outdated and work less effectively. Some outdated drivers work at less-than-optimum levels, such as outdated video codec drivers resulting in poor quality video viewing, and some don't work at all! And that's just one outdated driver. Countless problems arise from multiple outdated drivers causing error after error on your computer. Outdated drivers make your computer unreliable and troublesome to work on. They also have compatibility issues when you upgrade or change to a new operating system. They also have inherent problems and bugs that mistranslate your software's commands and result in poorly-functioning (and sometimes not functioning at all) hardware. Common driver related errors result in a program crashing, getting a blue screen or your computer rebooting without warning. When this happens it is an indication that you need to update your drivers. Sometimes, re-installing a driver can solve the problem but it is more likely that an update is needed. You would take it lightly if you kept blacking out or falling down. Don't make the mistake of thinking that it's normal for that to happen to your personal computer. No one wants a poorly performing computer just like no one wants an unhealthy body.

Fortunately, the companies that make these drivers periodically offer updates for their products. These updates help your computer perform better. Updates get rid of problems and errors you had with your old, outdated driver and make sure that your driver is compatible with your updated operating system. More importantly, they make sure that you have a reliable and fully-functional computer when you need it. So don't let your computer run on outdated drivers. Just like you, your computer needs a boost every now and then.
