There are a number of outdoor activities that involves the snow and the mountainous trails. These activities can be great family sports and can challenge people of all skill levels. Snow sports are great exercise and tons of fun. Whether it be skiing, sledding or hiking trails, these activities can test endurance or can be an afternoon hobby. When planning for an outdoor winter activity, plan ahead. Make sure in case of an emergency there is someone around who is trained in outdoor emergency care.

At almost all recreational snow facilities there is a staff of trained technicians known as Outdoor Emergency Patrol (OEP). Outdoor Emergency Patrol is essential in providing the care and assistance needed to trauma victims in the event of an accident. The ability of the OEP to respond quickly is the reason that they are deployed in areas where it can be difficult for other emergency units to arrive. Outdoor Emergency Patrol responders are highly trained and have a high success rate in emergency first response.

Another common OEP is the Ski Patrol. The ski patrol ensures safe conditions on ski hills across the country. They also are properly trained in outdoor emergency care to be able to tend to those who are injured in a skiing or snowboarding accident.

The training to become a ski patroller is extensive. First, the prospective ski patroller must be familiar with the terrain and the areas that they will be deployed in this means that they need between 80-100 hours of classroom work and study time. A large portion of the training is written coursework to become familiar to the proper care and how to address difficult situations as they arise. An additional aspect of the training involves first-aid training. First-aid in a wilderness setting is a great deal different than the first-aid training in urban environments because the available resources are significantly reduced. The outdoor emergency care trainee must use their knowledge of the surrounding area. Awareness and training regarding the outdoor locations are essential aspects of the training for potential OEC. They must become experts in the field.
