Outdoor Fire Pits - A Great Addition To Your Backyard Living Area

Adding an outdoor fire pit for your backyard living area can add a certain glow (no pun intended) to an evening outside. My husband has always loved sitting around his firepit at night. I always used to say he was a bit of a piro, making the fire as big as he possibly could. When we had our property in upstate N.Y., we not only had a fire pit, we had a FIREPIT! We could burn six-foot logs in that thing!

But times have changed and we are now living in a more residential area and need to keep things under control. We are still lucky enough that a small fire pit is ok and he's happy as ever with that. My kids love to roast marshmallows and hotdogs over the fire.

Some of you may live in areas where actual fire pits that are dug out of the ground are not allowed, but you may be able to get a small backyard fire pit that stands on it's own. Most communities do allow a controlled fire, but it would be a good idea to check with the HOA or community fire department first.

What Materials Are Outdoor Fire Pits Made Of?

Ready made outdoor fire pits can be made from a variety of materials that can suite just about anybody's personal tastes. The type of fire pit you purchase should fit in with the outdoor backyard living space you have created, be it a woodland getaway or a more formal space with a pool and gardens. The most popular and readily available materials are:

- Cast Iron
- Copper
- Stainless Steel
- Steel
- Stone & Tile
- Clay

What Are The Different Types And Styles Of Outdoor Fire Pits?

Besides being made from a variety of materials, outdoor fire pits also come in a variety of styles. You can get a wood table with a fire pit insert, one that looks like a fireplace or a copper kettle, to name a few.

They are also able to burn different fuels - wood, natural gas or propane. Wood burning fire pits are the most popular. There's nothing like the smell of a wood burning fire. Natural gas and propane are quick lighting.

What Is A Chiminea?

Chimineas originated in Mexico and were made of clay. They were used as a means of cooking as well as providing heat. Chimineas are designed with a small chimney that allows smoke to rise upwards and produce a tremendous amount of heat. The problem with clay chimineas is they tend to crack if they are hot and then exposed to a sudden downpour of rain. Because of this they are now made from other materials such as copper, steel and cast iron as well as the traditional clay.

We bought an outdoor firepit last year, and we love it. We can make our own here, but we chose to buy one. We love roasting marshmellows too. My sister has an old Chiminea, but I don't know if it's even usable. I like the look of Chimineas.
