A Melrose Montana Fly Fishing Vacation

Welcome to my lens about our vacation in Melrose Montana. Located in the southwest portion of Montana, between Dillon and Butte, Melrose is close enough to larger towns, yet far enough away to appreciate nature. Nestled against millions of acres of the Beaverhead Deerlodge National Forest, Melrose can be your jumping off point to adventure.

Fish the Bighole River, the Beaverhead River, and the Ruby River! All in a short drive from Melrose!

Sometimes the destination is better than the journey

For me, on our trips to Montana, the journey can never end soon enough. I want to be there. Forget the outlet malls, tourist traps, let me get to the waters.

As you can tell, I am a fisherman. I prefer outdoorsman as fishing is not my only pursuit. However, fishing holds a dear part of my heart. Memories of my father, brother and I, fishing at the many campgrounds we visited as a kids. In my teens, fishing with friends who have gone on to other things and places. Now in my adulthood, spending time with my wife and sharing the outdoors with her and its many gifts. Yes, sometimes the best things in life are the simplest, and or free.

Outdoor photos from around Melrose.

Here are some of our pictures from around the Melrose area. The pics with the domes, are old turn of the century charcoal kilns. Some of these pictures look blurry but it was starting to snow, in June. The photo of me standing with my hand on top of the snow drift was also taken in June, and I am 6 ft. Shows how much snow they get in the winter.

So enjoy!

Fishing pictures

This will give you some pictures of us on the Bighole, and the Beaverhead rivers. Alot of public access, but sometimes the best fishing is from a drift boat. We use Montana Fly Company out of Melrose.

Methods

There are different ways to fish. I choose fly fishing. But one can bait fish, spin cast.

What is your prefered method of fishing?

Fly Fishing

Rob_W says:

As you read I am a fly fisher, I enjoy trying to fool a trout with a fly.

Rod and reel (non fly fishing)

sandyspider says:

Non-fly for my family. Though it is my husband and daughter who love to fish.

bdkz says:

Rod 'N Reel. But only because I've never tried fly fishing. On my list to do!

Catch and Release Duel

Here is a new topic for debate. Catch and Release, or keep.
Since I like to fish alot, I do catch and release, however I will keep if I am going to use the catch for dinner. So what do you do?

Yes I know there is overlap here, but lets have some fun!

Catch and Release, or keep all that you catch?

Catch and Release

chezz says:

Well, first of all the gloves have to go if you are going to hold a fish for the pic. You have removed allot of skin slime with the rough suface of your gloves. You should have probably eaten them because you just may have shortended their lives a great deal. If one has to eat fish then harvest them from the lakes or smnall creeks and of course no cuts. Great tri and pics. I am very luck as this is my home area..

Rob_W says:

Catch em, and release em! But if you want one for dinner, enjoy!

bdkz says:

Catch & Release. There's always the "Filet-O-Fish" for dinner.

Keep it, Keep it all!

My favorite book idea, and movie options

Just thought I would add one more goup of items for you!
