As the winter months approach, most people in the Chicago area seem to flee indoors to hibernate for the next several months. Don't let the cold grey skies keep you indoors when there are plenty of outdoor skating rinks located in the greater Chicago metropolitan area. Some of these rinks are open only a few weeks out of the year whiles other are open through the end of March courtesy of elaborate refrigeration systems as well as new synthetic rinks cropping up all over the Midwest. Thankfully Chicago has the right climate and plenty of outdoor rinks located right in the city as well as the suburbs to engage a pick up a game of hockey or work on figure skating. Skating is a fun and creative outlet for a cheap date as well as an entertaining exercise to burn a few calories. Below is a brief list of ten reputable outdoor ice rinks found in the greater Chicago area. Top Ice Skating Rinks Located Downtown Chicago
Millennium Park
Located at Millennium Park right in front of Park Grill (Michigan Avenue between Washington and Madison Streets) is the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink. Skating at Millennium is free, though there is a charge for skate rental. The ice surface is natural and chilled by refrigeration system that allows for early and late skating seasons. Hockey or passing the puck is not permitted at this rink. This rink carries daytime and evening hours and boasts wonderful views of city skyline and the park. Aside from the "bean", the McCormick Tribune ice rink at Millennium Park stands out as one of the crown jewels of the East loop. Located at the friendly confines of Wrigley Field (1060 W. Addison) is another family fun ice rink in Chicago. There is an admission to skate at Wrigley of ten bucks, though seasonal passes are sold for approximately $60. Steeper prices prevail at Wrigley compared to the other Chicago Park District rinks; though one must remember it is Wrigley and afterwards you can say you skated the friendly confines. Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks West Suburbs of Chicago
NapervilleA straight shot west of the city about forty five minutes one can find the multiple rinks located at Centennial Park in Naperville. Centennial Park rinks are located in the downtown Naperville area at 500 West Jackson. Skating is free and open daily. You will need to bring your own skates as none are available to rent. These natural ice rinks include two hockey rinks in addition to an area available for open skate. Elmhurst
This oldie but goodie YMCA Ice rink is located in downtown Elmhurst at 211 W 1st Street. This is one of the very few YMCA establishments in Illinois to host their own ice rink (hockey boards included). This natural ice surface rink is open from mid November through Mid March. There is an admission charged for open skate. Skates are available for rent. This rink is reserved for skating and hockey events throughout the season, so it is recommended to contact the YMCA Ice Rink for public skate hours and rat hockey times. Venture out to Centennial Park in the south suburb of Orland Park for some fun winter skating. Centennial Park is located at 15600 West Avenue in Orland. There is no admission for skating and rentals are available for those that do not have skates. The natural ice rink is for open skating only (no hockey allowed).
