Ever wanted to have an out of body experience?

It's one of the most seductive of paranormal experiences: the idea of being able to leave one's body and float to another place, even another dimension. People don't realize that the experience is common enough to be looked at in scientific research, to try to explain how the phenomenon occurs. Most cases of out of body experience (OBE) seem to be spontaneous, but for decades epople have tried to come up with good ways of inducing and controlling out of body experience, primarlity with meditation techniques and relaxation.

I go out of body frequently and easily, and can tell you: the secret of going out of body is not having a relaxed mind! It's achieved in quite the opposite way...

What is an out of body experience?

Slipping the boundaries of body...

Out of body experiences, or astral projection, happen when we realize we have somehow slipped outside our bodies and our consciousness is elsewhere, sometimes even looking back at our physical selves!

When I was eight years old I was playing with a friend I adored. She did something that I thought was terrific while we were playing ball, and I suddenly found myself going over and giving her a kiss on the cheek. She didn't seem embarrassed - in fact, she didn't seem to notice! Embarrassed, I turned around to go back to my side of the playing field -

and saw I was still standing over there!

That's the first time I remember going out of body. When I was a child, it was always spontaneous. It scared me sometimes. I got to the point where I would dream that I was terrified of going out and flying too high, and not able to get back. The nightmares affected the way I would leave my body and I never seemed to slip out far - but I did keep on going out! Why?

An out-of-body experience (OBE or sometimes OOBE), is an experience that typically involves a sensation of floating outside of one's body and, in some cases, perceiving one's physical body from a place outside one's body (autoscopy). The term out-of-the-body experience was introduced in 1943 by G.N.M Tyrrell in his book Apparitions,G.N.M. Tyrrell, Apparitions, Gerald Duckworth and Co. Ltd, London, 1943, pp. 149. and adopted by, for example, Celia GreenC.E. Green, Out-of-the-body Experiences, Hamish Hamilton, London, 1968. and Robert MonroeJourneys Out of the Body, 1971, Robert Monroe, ISBN 0-385-00861-9 as a bias-free alternative to belief-centric labels such as "astral projection" or "spirit walking". Though the term usefully distances researchers from scientifically problematic concepts such as the soul, scientists still know little about the phenomenon.BBC NEWS | UK | Magazine | Out-of-body or all in the mind? Those who have experienced OBEs sometimes claim to have observed details which were unknown to them beforehand.http://www.near-death.com/experiences/evidence01.html People Have NDEs While Brain Dead Retrieved Sept 21, 2007

In some cases the phenomenon appears to occur spontaneously; in others it is associated with a physical or mental trauma, use of psychedelic drugs, dissociative drugs, or a dream-like state. Many techniques aiming to induce the experience deliberately have been developed,Bruce, Robert (1999) Astral Dynamics: A NEW Approach to Out-of-Body Experiences ISBN 1-57174-143-7, Chapters 15?22 for example visualization while in a relaxed, meditative state. Recent (2007) studies have shown that experiences somewhat similar to OBEs can be induced by direct brain stimulation. Some of those who experience OBEs claimed to have willed themselves out of their bodies, while others report having found themselves being pulled from their bodies (usually preceded by a feeling of paralysis). In other accounts, the feeling of being outside the body was suddenly realized after the fact, and the experiencers saw their own bodies almost by accident.SOBEs OBEs often occur during the borderline stage between REM sleep and arousal when sleep paralysis may persist and dream imagery may mingle with sensory input.

Some neurologists have suspected that the event is triggered by a mismatch between visual and tactile signals. They used a virtual reality setup to recreate an OBE. The subject looked through goggles and saw his own body as it would appear to an outside observer standing behind him. The experimenter then touched the subject at the same time as a rod appeared to touch the virtual image. The experiment created an illusion of being behind and outside one's body. However, critics point out that it is uncertain how this relates to the OBE phenomenon.BBC NEWS | Health | Out-of-body experience recreated

So if Meditation doesn't work, what does?

Meditation can work - but only if meditation really DOESN'T work!

Huh?

In meditation the goal is to still one's mind as one stills one's body. But I have a very active mind and it is difficult for me to keep it still, or even to stay still at all. That's how I realized the secret: during the years when I was practicing Zen meditation, I kept popping out of my body right and left during zazen sessions! It didn't take me long to figure out why:

My body was still - my mind wasn't.

What's The Secret?

The secret of going out of body is to practice going out while the body is very still and the mind is hyperactive.

Here is an exercise that will help the more you practice it: Go someplace where you feel comfortable sitting relaxed and still for a very long time. Do not lie down - you don't want to be completely relaxed, and you do not want to go completely into a different brain wave state - you need your brain to stay active in beta mode. Work to make your body as still as possible, determined to control the stillness rather than relax into the stillness. You are working on focus, not on relaxation.

Now: pick a point across the room or across the area where you are sitting, where you want to go. Imagine going there. Focus on what it is like to be in that space and have the point of view of being in that space.

Then take a break and just keep your mind focused on something actively distracting, even though you are still controlling the stillness of your body.

Go back to focusing on the point where you want to go. Then go back to being actively mentally distracted, but phsyically still.

The more you do this, the tension between the desire to go somewhere, the physical restriction, and the active mind, will push you out into an obe.

But is it safe???

There have been a lot of old wives' tales about not being able to come back, but the truth is, the tiniest fear or hesitation will bring you right back. We've got great built-in homing devices!

Inducing "Simulated" Out of Body Experience

Some scientists believe that this is what out of body experience is, but it is an illusion, close to the effects of OBE, but in spite of the claim made here, it is not OBE. However, a number of people who feel they have had OBE experience may have experienced this instead. I know I have done this a few times.

The difference between this illusion and true OBE is that in true OBE you can clearly see what is going on. I have often gone out of body to look at what I am doing from the outside, especially when I practice my instruments, and want to see my hand and arm positions. So, for me, OBE is not just an interesting experience, but a useful one...

Virtual out-of-body experience

A group of neuroscientists have induced out-of-body experiences for the first time, using virtual reality and an experimental set-up. Read more about it here: http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn12531-outofbody-experiences-are-all-in-the-mind.html
