Worried About Ovarian Cysts Stopping Your From Getting Pregnant?

Many women, especially those trying to get pregnant, worry about ovarian cysts. If you have them, does it mean you can't get pregnant? The not-so-straightforward answer is -- it depends. There are several different types of ovarian cysts and one type can contribute to infertility. In most cases, however, ovarian cysts do not cause any such damage or harm and they pretty much go away on their own.

How Ovarian Cysts Effect You?

An ovarian cyst forms inside or on the external surface of the ovaries. Functional ovarian cysts are the most common type and normally occur in menstruating or ovulating females. They form when the follicles in the ovaries mature but fail to burst open and release an egg but instead start filling with fluid. They often get smaller and dissolve on their own within a few months without medical intervention.

Some Cysts are Not as Serious

Some types of ovarian cysts are not filled with fluid but with certain tissues such as Endometriomas wherein the growth consists of tissues that line the endometrium (inner lining of the uterus). It may also be filled with a gel-like material such as in Cystadenomas. Again, most of these types of ovarian cysts should not be a cause for anxiety.

However, ovarian cysts that have grown to a large size can make sexual intercourse painful and this could lead to couples having less sex. Of course, it can take just a single act for a woman to get pregnant but it's logical to think that partners who are more sexually active would have greater chances of conceiving a child. Aside from painful sex, ovarian cysts that do need to be looked at by a doctor are those that cause painful menstruation, pressure in the pelvic and abdominal area, and difficulty in urinating.

You Can Still Get Pregnant in Many Cases

The particular type of ovarian cyst that is known to affect fertility is related to Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). Women who have PCOS have ovaries that are about 3 times larger than normal and the outer surface of their ovaries have so many small follicles that rarely become mature and ovulate. Because of this, women with PCOS are less fertile and have highly irregular periods so they will find it difficult - not impossible - to get pregnant.

To conclude, ovarian cysts do not prevent pregnancy entirely. If you have PCOS, getting pregnant would be harder but certainly not hopeless. Your doctor will recommend the best way to stabilize your hormone levels. For all women, the best course of action is to have regular pelvic exams to identify potential problems early on and get any necessary treatment.
