Erectile Dysfunction - An Overview

Erectile dysfunction is a problem many men fear and almost expect, especially as they get older. Impotence, as it was called, used to be difficult to treat with the main emphasis on psychological treatments, as the mind was thought to be a major cause of male sexual problems.

Now thanks to a chance finding during a drug trial 15 years ago erectile dysfunction is a far better researched problem with some great drug treatments available. My lens will give an overview of the medical condition and the treatment options available.

Your Quick Guide About Impotence

Erectile dysfunction (also called impotence) covers a wide range of sexual problems such as lack of sexual desire and problems with orgasm both premature and delayed. Erectile dysfunction is the inability to get or maintain a firm erection.

All men go through short times of these problems. Only if it is persistent over say 2 months is it considered to be erectile dysfunction by the medical authorities. It is surprisingly common in men affecting anything up to 1 in 5 with the incidence increasing with age.

What are the Causes of Impotence

In the recent past your mind was blamed as the root cause of poor sexual performance. This was of course totally incorrect. Chronic medical conditions are the main culprits. Of these high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic kidney problems, arterial disease and heart disesase are the big causes. Other medical problems causing ED involve damage to nerves after operations, a CVA (stroke), trauma and unexpected accidents.

Drugs including blood pressure lowering such as beta-blockers, anti depressants, anti histamines, some tranquillisers and anti stomach ulcer drugs also cause ED.

Also of course a poor diet, lack of exercise and smoking can all cause impotence.

The mind can have an effect so if you feel guilty, anxious, stressed out, overtired or just down, you may run into unexpected difficulties.

How Impotence Is Treated

Treatment Of Erectile Dysfunction

Drug treatments

Oral medication is now the treatment of choice for many men. The three most popular medications are Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. They are all the same type of drug with slightly different speed of action. You get an erection between 15 and 60 mins after taking them as they encourage blood to flow into your penis.

Drugs such as papaverine hydrochloride, phentolamine, and alprostadil (known as Caverject) can be injected into the penis to get an erection.

A slightly different drug is called Muse, which is a small tablet. You don't swallow it, you push it into urethra (the hole your wee comes out of) and it gives you an erection.

Other Treatments For Impotence

The old standby of a vacuum pump is still very effective, combined with a rubber band around the bottom of the penis to maintain your erection.

Changing your other drug treatments may help as things like blood pressure can be treated with a range of drugs but it must be under your doctors' supervision.

Lifestyle changes include losing weight, drinking less and stopping smoking. Getting fit can help as well so you feel so much more lively and hopefully also notice your impotence problem decreasing.
