Overcoming Panic Attacks

How To Restore Joy and Happiness

Panic attacks can rob you of the joy and happiness you once felt and overcoming panic attacks can give that back to you. Here are some tips to help you when you are having an attack or feel like you will:

  • First of all, learning to breath the right way can help stave off a panic attack. When we are feeling anxious, we tend to withhold breathing and gasp for air. This can cause an imbalance in the intake of oxygen and the levels of carbon dioxide in the blood. This causes dizziness, muscle pain, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, all of the symptoms of panic attacks. If you calm down a little and control your breathing, this can help ward off a panic attack and lessen it's effects. Learn to take long, slow breathes.

  • Second, posture has a really big effect on panic attacks, because it also has an effect on breathing correctly. Bad posture = bad breathing. Try to walk around during the day if you are sitting most of the time. Our modern lives tend to make us more sedintary, but this can have a negative effect on our bodies. Exercise can lead to good posture, which in turn leads to better breathing.

  • Last, try to distract yourself when having a panic attack. If you can learn that as soon as you feel like you will have or are having a panic attack to start to distract yourself, you will have a better chance at ending the attack. Try to think about something funny, listen to music, get up and walk around, count numbers in your head, look at pictures of happy things.

Learning to cope with them is the first step. Learning to get rid of them is next. For a great resource and additional help visit Stop Panic Attacks
