If a person is suffering from extreme shyness, he or she tends to avoid other people. There is also a tendency to refrain from participating in social events or gatherings.

Individuals who have extreme shyness do not usually speak up or assert themselves to other people, leading others to take advantage of them. They also have a difficult time initiating small talk or casual conversations with other people, which naturally makes them look like they are aloof or uninterested. Consequently, they also have a hard time forming as well as maintaining relationships.

Overcoming social anxiety can be a big challenge. However, there are different tips and techniques that individuals who have social anxiety can do. Here are some of the effective tips they can use:

Improve your attitude

Individuals who have extreme shyness usually have unrealistic expectations regarding their behaviors. For example, those who are extremely shy do not want to commit any mistakes. These unrealistic expectations can be very destructive. In order to overcome social anxiety, individuals who have social anxiety need to loosen up.

Individuals who have social anxiety also think that other people are always watching their every move. They also think that they are being evaluated and criticized all the time. Most of the time, though, these are false perceptions. Not everyone would take time to watch, criticize or evaluate another person, right?

Here is something that individuals who have social anxiety disorder need to realize: it is okay to make mistakes sometimes. Do not be too hard on yourself. If you make a mistake, think of the positive results. Did you learn something new? Or were you able to form a relationship with another person? It pays to relax and loosen up a bit.

Make small steps

Individuals who have social anxiety disorder usually dread seeking support or assistance because this involves making necessary changes. For example, extremely shy individuals need to start developing their social skills. They also need to open up to people, as well as to start making conversations. There is no harm in saying "hello" or flashing a smile, moreover.

In school, teachers and other education professionals should guide those who are extremely shy. Teachers, parents, and adults should support shy children at school so that they would be able to overcome their social anxiety. One way to encourage school children who are extremely shy to overcome anxiety is by giving them tasks that would surely develop their self-confidence.

At home, kids who are extremely shy should be encouraged to share their feelings and experiences. It is also important to note that kids can model their behavior from their parents. If their parents are naturally shy, there is likelihood that they also become shy. When dealing with this situation, it is important not to put shyness in a bad light. It is important to make kids perceive that shyness is a normal behavior that can be improved over time.
