Overnight Bag Review - How to pack and what to pack in!
Overnight bags are great for those one or two night trips. When you are packing for this short a time, you only need to take a few things. I intentionally use a small bag in order to force me to pack less. For this reason I am a HUGE fan of overnight bags. In this article I will go through what to pack in your overnight bag, and give several recommendations for overnight bags broken down by occasion.
What to pack?
I noticed that the less I pack, the happier I am about what I packed. Having more with you than you need is a burden in many ways. Have more stuff weighs more, and whether you need to carry your bag a long or a short distance this still has an impact. Just going from the car to the hotel room can create some stress that you do not need when you are trying to enjoy your weekend or time away from home. Next, the more stuff you have with you in your overnight bag, the more thought you will need to put into getting ready. I bet you all have heard or said the phrase "I don't know what to wear" while on a trip. Whether you have experienced this problem yourself, or have dealt with someone who has, which can be even worse , it is stress that can be avoided by packing only what you need. Lastly, the more you bring, the more likely you are to leave something behind.
Here is what I bring on a typical overnight trip:
Underwear/socks - One pare per night stay
Clothing - 2 outfits - one that I wear and one that I bring (I often bring only wear a pair of jeans and wear them there and the next day)
Shoes - 1 pair that you are wearing, maximum 2 pairs if the occasion requires. Ladies with heals should consider a pair of sandals for comfort.
Toiletries - Toothbrush, hair products, medication
Other - Limit your personal items to 1 book and or one device.

Formal, Fancy, or Business
For formal occasions I prefer to use a nice canvas weekend bag. Leather is also and option, but it is usually more expensive and can be heavier. I vote no wheels or roller bags. If you have wheels, you are more likely to pack more, which is what we want to avoid. They are also bulky and not attractive whether you are a lady or a man.
Fun and Casual Weekend Bags
I prefer to use backpacks, messenger bags, and small duffel bags for more fun and relaxed occasions. Backpacks and messenger bags are great for overnight trips outdoors, to a friend's house, or for a quick fun and informal weekend. Messenger bags are trendy and are made by many hip brands. Small backpacks or daypacks might be better if you are going to be outside or have to walk/bike a longer distance. I use duffel bags for weekend trips that require bulky and odd items. For example I might use my duffel if I am snowboarding for the weekend so I stuff my helmet and other gear in there.
