Following is a list of such possible solutions. Fortunately, there are lots to choose from. You might want to choose one or two that appeal, and see if they help.

Some Tried and True Methodologies to Help You Get Up on Time

You've Probably Read These Before, But You Might Try Them Again Because They're Actually Very Helpful

Maybe you already do some of these things. Look the list over and you might decide to add one or two of the following to your repertoire.
  • At bedtime, think ahead a little. Take a few minutes to reflect on what you have to do tomorrow and smooth your own path. Find your keys, consider what you're going to wear, maybe put coffee in your pot so it'll be ready to go. (Facing the morning with the a dearth of clean laundry or caffeinated products does add to resistance.) The more orderly and well-planned your morning is, the easier it will be to just lurch out of bed and slip into the program you've considerately created for yourself.
  • When you set your alarm, be reasonable. If you're going to bed at 1:00 a.m. don't set your alarm for 6:00 a.m. if you don't really have to get up till 7:00 a.m. In the morning you will be will be plenty smart enough to figure out that you can sleep another hour, thereby running the risk of going back to sleep for a long time.
  • Create some peaceful ritual around going to bed. Change into pajamas or some clothes you like to sleep in, get a glass of water or make a cup of herbal tea if you like. Try to eliminate hapazardness from the bedtime process. For example, don't leave the lights on or allow a blaring, flickering TV on to spoil your REM sleep. Heaven knows what infomercials could be leaking into your brain while you're unconscious of it.

  • Try to get enough sleep. Obviously, this is not always possible. But most people function best on 7-8 hours' sleep, so if you are consistently shorting yourself, plan to catch up from time to time.
  • Put your alarm clock on the other side of the room so you have to get up to turn it off. You can buy several and set them to go off one minute apart.

Other Interesting Ideas You Might Not Have Tried

New Things to Try

  • Put your bed near a window, leave the shades open and let the morning sun help wake you up.

  • Try setting your radio alarm clock to a talk station. If you're interested in politics or sports, try a news or sports station. If you like trivia, put it on NPR. The idea is that your mind may gradually get interested in the content of the conversation, allowing you to wake up more easily.
  • On the other hand, if you prefer a more antagonistic approach, you can try setting your radio to some kind of music you loathe. Try waking up to hip-hop if you like Bach, and vice-versa.
