How Find Keywords With The Overture Suggestion Tool

A few years ago, the overture suggestion tool was the place to go for keyword research. You would type in your keyword and the tool would return a list of related keywords. Plus, it told you how many searches were performed for each of the keywords it returned. At the time, this was the keyword tool to use to construct a keyword list.

Yahoo has since bought the original Overture company. It is now know as Yahoo Search Mareting. But alas, the overture suggestion tool is a thing of the past.

The good news is now Google offers a free suggestion tool. Google is the leading search engine, so it is better to have data from Google instead of Yahoo. The Google suggestion tool returns related keywords, advertiser competition from Adwords, local monthly search volume and global monthly search volume.

How To Find Low Competition Keywords 

Low competition keyword phrases are the key to success in PPC marketing, SEO, and affiliate marketing. You want to target low competition keywords in Adwords to keep the CPC down. You also want low competition when trying to rank on Googles organic search. How do you find low competition keywords?

Start by building your list using the Google keyword tool. Then go right to Google Search. Type in one of your keywords, but begin with a double quote and end with a double quote. This is called wrapping your keyword in double quotes. Performing a Google Search with these double quotes instructs Google to only return pages the contain the phrase word for word. It is called a phrase match.

At the top right of any Google Search results you'll find text like "Results 1 - 10 of about X for". The X is the number of pages that contain your keyword phrase. The smalled that number, the less organic competition there is. You should shoot for 10,000 or less. More than 10,000 pages on a phrase match indicates that you will ave a difficult time of ranking for the keyword.

Don't forgot the Google suggestion tool returns the number of searches per month. Combine monthly searches with phrase match competition to find high search volume low competition keywords.

Buyer Keywords 

Another consideration when selecting keywords is what is the mindset of the searcher. Is the consumer looking for information only, that is they are just kicking tires? Or are they credit card in hand consumers looking to make a purchase. Different mindsets use different keywords.

For example, suppose you are marketing a carpet cleaner, Widget A. Someone looking to purchase Widget A might type the product name into Google. Or they might type in "buy Widget A". When you get a keyword phrase like that, you know the consumer is looking to purchase the product today.

Alternatively, something looking for information might search on a generic keyword like "carpet cleaners". Or they could search for "how to clean carpets". These type of searches indicate the consumer is just looking for information.

Consumers using buyer keywords are more likely to convert into sales.
