Owl Purse

Owl Purse - A Beginning Crochet Pattern

This is a simple Owl Purse that you can make using just the beginning single crochet stitch.

I made this pattern up as part of a series of beginning patterns I hope will introduce more people to the art of crochet.

Grab yourself a I-crochet hook and some yarn and let's get started.

Materials:

The essentials to a Great Owl Purse

  1. I crochet Hook
  2. Yarn - I used Red Heart super saver and some scraps I had around
  3. Tapestry needle to weave in ends
  4. Google eyes or Buttons
  5. Felt or Crochet circles [I have a tutorial for this]

Eyes

Crochet Circles for eyes

You already know how to make a single crochet stitch why not challenge yourself and learn how to make a spiral circle in crochet? Check out my tutorial for details.

You will make two circles and then slip stitch them together. [use a small hook G for these]
Chain 2
6single crochet in 2nd chain from hook [do not join, work in a spiral] (6sc)
2sc in each stitch around (12sc)
1sc in first stitch, 2sc in next stitch [repeat this pattern all around] (18sc)
1sc in first 2 stitches, 2sc in next stitch [repeat this pattern all around] (24)

With both circles side by side, slip stitch the two together ~ 4 -5 stitches

Legs and Talons

Just the Chain stitch

Making these legs and talons for your Owl purse is simple. You only need to know the chain stitch and slip stitch. It is made in one piece so no sewing - yay!

Talons-Legs: [make 2, i-hook]
Chain 6, slip stitch in second chain from hook and in each stitch across
Chain 6, slip stitch in second chain from hook and in each stitch across
chain 6, slip stitch in second chain from hook and in each stitch across, slip stitch in middle stitch [this is the middle talon]
Chain 11, slip stitch in second chain from hook and in each stitch across, end off
weave in ends.

Ears

Double up on your yarn

You will need to double your yarn to make this stand up properly. You will also need to know how to Decrease single crochet. If that sounds too difficult for you, don't worry, just cut out some felt ears and sew or glue on to your owl purse.

Ears: [make 2, double yarn, I-hook]
chain 5
single crochet in the second chain from hook and in the next 3 stitches [sc 4], chain 1 turn
Decrease 2 times [*ask me if you need help with this stitch] , chain 1 turn
Single crochet in next 2 stitches, chain 1 turn
decrease 1 time, chain 1 turn
end off.

Wings

Single crochet, Double Crochet and Triple Crochet

For the wings you can just cut out felt and glue or sew on if you do not know how to do the double or triple crochet.

It isn't hard, really, I've included my picture tutorials just in case you would like to give it a try.

Making the Wings: use I-hook
[2]
Chain 10
single crochet in the second chain from hook, half double crochet in next st, double crochet in next stitch, triple crochet in next stitch, double crochet in next stitch, half double crochet in next stitch, single crochet in next stitch, slip stitch in last two stitches. [wing complete]

Sew this onto your purse.

Making the Cord

To make a cord just join your yarn with a slip stitch to one corner, chain 50, slip stitch in second chain from hook and in each chain across, Slip stitch to the other corner. End off.

Your owl purse is adorable! I'm working on a pomegranate at the moment - I bought a pattern off etsy, but good grief, it had nothing to indicate what size thread, hook, or gauge, so they aren't exactly what I was hoping for.

hmmm, I would guess-ti-mate the size you want and then work from there. For amigurumi you want a hook smaller than is suggested on the yarn skein. i.e. if the yarn calls for a J hook you'll need to go to a H hook

I usually use worsted weight yarn with a g hook. The smaller the hook the less likely your filling with break through.

You might want to ask the person you bought the pattern from - she may not even know she didn't include that information in the pattern.
