Owls Are Your Best Friends When You Have Mice

If you live in a semi rural area, chances are you have Mice, and you have Owls. They are common enemies in nature, and Owls rely on Mice for their very existence. Just like cats, Owls do not drink a lot of water in the wild, but get all of their liquid nourishment from their mice. Mice are the perfect food, have the right amount of calcium for these amazing birds, have the right vitamins and minerals, and are truly the right size for any Owl's nighttime breakfast.

Come along as we talk about Owls, why they are important to our ecology, and what you can do to bring an owl into your life!

Mice Hate Owls

They die by the Owl!

Screech OwlsIf you have any large trees in your area, chances are you could have an owl inhabiting that area. It is important that if you have mice, you allow these birds to live and function within your area. There is no reason to be wary of owls, as they are often times night time creatures, and are silent except for the occasional call.

A list of common owls in North America includes but does not exclude the following species:

1. Screech Owls(shown in Picture)
2. Snowy Owls
3. Barred Owl
4. Barn Owl
5. Eastern Screech-Owl
6. Great Horned Owl
7. Northern Hawk Owl
8. Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl
9 .Elf Owl
10. Burrowing Owl
11. Barred Owl
12. Great Gray Owl
13. Long-eared Owl
14. Short-eared Owl
15. Boreal Owl
16. Northern Saw-whet Owl

Owl Boxes are A Great Way to Add an Owl!

If you have Trees, and Mice, You Need an Owl Box!

Barred Owl On a LeashIf you want to add an Owl to your rural and woody acreage, chances are you have a population nearby. These animals adapt well to new surroundings, and will move into any area with trees. The Owls in your area most likely only need a box to nest, and will gladly move into any wooden box you build and place high enough for them to nest.

There are a number of great resources for adding a pre-built owl nest box into your area, and they can be ordered online. The best owl boxes are ones that come with installation and a bit of advice on where to place the box. You may need to contact a local owl expert in your area before installing any nest box!

I do suggest a box with a camera, as it can be very interesting to see what your owl is up to, and easy to view the owl with any wifi connection. It is a great technology!

Owl Nest Boxes Are a Great Mouse Catcher

The best mouse trap!

Owl Nest Box

If you have a rodent problem, you can really make a difference, save some Owls, and solve your rodent problems with an Owl Nest Box. The boxes can be quite elaborate, with web cameras built in, and some real weight to them. If you are lucky, you can build a box, get it installed in the fall, and then by spring have a nested pair raising a brood.

The babies will require many mice, rats or other vermin. The parents will be busy raising their little ones in a very effective way, by also helping you with your rodents. You may need to learn about the Owls that live in your location, and plan this project carefully, but you can really find a great new way to rid yourself of many scurrying little feet!

We have owls around our area. They do help for mouse control, to some degree.
