This lens about owls is devoted to my great grandma Briley

I myself am not a huge owl lover or collector but even I can surely appreciate their beauty. This lens is in devotion to my great grandmother. I lost her back in 2002 but her love for life and love for owls is something that will live in my heart forever. She was a wonderful woman. She lived until the age of 90 and had a collection of almost 1000 owls. Her owls were auctioned off by no choice of my own. I would of at least liked to of had one of them to remember her by. But truth be told every time I see an owl any where, I think of her. So I would like to include some tidbits, pictures, and other interesting stuff about owls to help me remember my great grandma every time I come to my Squidoo.

A little info about owls

On my search to finding how many species of owls there were I have determined that there are more than 200 and the list is still growing. So I don't think we will be listing them all here right now. So let's first start instead by stating a few facts we might already know.
Owls are nocturnal, which means they are active at night, except for the exception of a few like the Burrowing owl. They hunt mammals, insects, other small birds and a few species even hunt fish.
The smallest species of owl would be the Elf Owl.

Eurasian Eagle Owl

The largest 2 owls are eagle owls. They are the Eurasian Eagle Owl and the Blakiston's Fish Owl.

Endangered Owls

So of all the species of owls it was very hard to pick a few to focus on for my lens. But I quickly decided where to start once I found out there are a few owls that are endangered.

So why is the burrowing owl disappearing?
*To many predators.
*Not enough burrows (animals that build burrows in general)
*Loss of grasslands (because of farms, homes, businesses, and roads)
*Poisoning (owls eat animals that have been poisoned, most commonly squirrels)
*Spray used to kill grasshoppers harms the owls.

So the next question would be, how can we help?
*Report any burrowing owl sightings. (in different areas there are different places to report to, search your state and where to report online, there are a lot of resources)
*leaving nesting sites alone
*setting aside land for nesting sites
*making artificial burrows for the owls to live in
*educating other people
*raising owls in captivity (it always helps to donate to your local zoo)
Check out the BC wildlife park. Their new mascot is the burrowing owl. It is supposed to be the largest owl breeding facility in the world.

Another of the endangered owl species is the Barn Owl.
These are one of the most beautiful owl species with their heart shaped faces and unique coloring.
So why are barn owls endangered?
Pretty much the same reasons as the burrowing owls. But some other factors are *They have predators such as opossums, raccoons, and similar carnivores animals, not to mention large raptors, hawks, eagles and even other owls.
Barn owls mostly live in meadows, salt marshes, and pastures, but some even claim their homes in church steeples.
And again what we can do to help these animals is just watch out for them, leave them alone, set aside space for them and most of all spread the word. For owl lovers and animal lovers alike, no one wants to loose these great magnificant creatures.
