Meet Salem Saberhagen
Why does Salem believe cameras are evil?
Unfortunately I don't know. If you walk up to him with a camera when he is standing he walks away. If you insist on following him, he will repeatedly turn his head so you do not see his face. Perhaps you are lucky and catch him laying down. This is an opportunity to press his face into his chest. Then the rare instance that you do catch his face, he will close his eyes. Add to this the already normal fact the camera is not certain how to process a black cat without making him look like a smudge.
Then on occasion throw a mostly white dog into the picture. The camera really is uncertain how to process the white dog and the black cat. But in this picture I tricked him, I buried my face into his back to keep him from leaving and snapped. But I ask one favor, please do not tell him there is a camera on top of my monitor.
Are black cats unlucky or lucky?
Black cats are unlucky.
In Western history black cats became synonymous with being witch familiars. In folklore, black cats were also able to transform into a human shape to report back to witches and demons. Gamblers, and through most of Europe and the United States a black cat crossing your path means bad luck. In China, black cats are believed to be the signs of famine and poverty. And the bad luck carries to the cat as well, because of his or her inky color, they have a lower adoption rate.
Black cats are lucky
In Japan and the United Kingdom a black cat crossing your path means good fortune is coming. Latvian farmers believe black cats to be the spirit of Rungis, a god of harvests. A strange black cat arriving at your home in Scotland means prosperity. The wives of fishermen keep black cats indoors to help keep their men safe while at sea. The British believe owning a black cat is lucky. For me, Salem is my second black cat, I consider myself twice blessed.
Join the Lucky Cat Debate
While different cultures credit black cats as lucky or unlucky, media and internet have blurred culture lines. Of course the fuzzy lines of an actual cat can blur the lines even further. While your culture may say black cats are lucky, one attacking you may have you place black cats in the unlucky category. A good experience of a black cat as a friend or a protector may turn you into a black cat lover.

Vampyre says:
I own a Black Domestic Short-Hair cat named Piwackit. She is an awesome cat and I found her on my grandmas doorstep on an October day when she was just a kitten. I say she is very lucky and friendly. Shes my familiar along with my other cat Bigshot.

I've never had a black cat... but a cat being black would not stop me from adopting one or taking one in.
writer_cb says:
They are lucky! I love cats of all kinds, color does not make a difference!
Cheryl says:
I have two black cats and adore them both. My babycat Gizzalina Bowpeena is very loving and my big guy Maggy Lou Boatswanna Lou Little Lolita of the Lowlands weighs 25 pounds and he is a gentle giant and always stays within arms reach.

A cat is a cat is a cat :) Everyone can be lucky or unlucky depending on which way you fall near the paint cans :)
Everyone Can Own Black Cats
Conversation pieces
These are very well behaved cats, they do not hide under the furniture when you have guests over. But do not expect their presence to go unnoticed. Be prepared for your guests to stare and ask questions, such as "Where did you get the cat?" or "Do they have more?" Soon your guests may develop black cat envy.
Where did you get Salem?
He's my 2nd black cat
The youth group and the cat
At that time I was a volunteer youth minister. Various teenagers were at the house at various times so they were used to Pandora and were upset at her loss. Eventually a mom of one of the youth found two barn cats, she decided to keep one and give me the black one. Since he was part of the youth group, we voted on his name. With many of them fans of Sabrina, Salem Saberhagen; the name of the warlock turned black cat, was chosen.
Does the name suit him?
He is not like that Salem, but the name suits him. He does not plot world domination, but he pretends to be mad quite often. Thus his other name is Mr. Grump. The humorous thing to me is his obsession with the bathroom water bowl. He wants it full. He sits with it. He stares into it. If it is empty or dirty he will stare endlessly at you. If you refill it he comes running in, so he can check it, then stare into it.
Click the image and you can go directly to see Sabrina and Salem.

Is owning a black cat different?
The two color related differences
Often times my camera or phone turns Salem into an inky black blob when he's inside the house. It takes bright lights to get a good picture of him, but then as the intro says, he hates his picture being taken. The other difference is Halloween. Up until two years ago he could go out whenever he wanted, except Halloween. I kept him in during Halloween, to prevent pranksters and other people from deciding to capture a black cat for Halloween tricks.

- Our cats, Meowsers & Clawdia, look almost identical to the photo of your two - I don't know why that would surprise me, though.
We bought the Littermaid automatic self cleaning cat litter box for my mother-in-law and she used it for something like 6 or 7 years. It worked great for her, but we had to change the catch-all container quite often ... she had a busy cat.
This lens should do well, MJ, because people love cats and you've added some personal stories that are appealing. Good job! (and I liked how you put Salem into Zazzle!)

- I had the Littermaid for years, and loved it. The machine slowly died, getting more and more erratic and I switched to the breeze. It's certainly more work, but it seems to be less smell, and less *gags* dust.
Lilo is my first tabby, first Maine coon, & first paranoid cat. But I've only cats 16 years. Not lifelong like dogs. I LOVE ? The names of your cats!

- I have four cats, three gray and one tabby - and while I'm allergic and can't keep them indoors, I love them all with their strikingly different personalities. Great lens MJ... Keep up the good work!
