Growing Your Own Bonsai or Buying Bonsai from a Nursery

Growing your own bonsai trees need not start by being expensive. Plants are free if grown from seed or cuttings and, for the first few years, any old pot will serve as a container.

Even if you choose to buy nursery trees to work with, they will still be relatively cheap compared with ready-grown bonsai of whatever quality. Depending on your ultimate aim, growing your own bonsai trees can be great fun, and the rewards to be had in terms of appreciation of the final result - plus the knowledge that it has been achieved by your own hand - is a joy beyond compare!

Almost all bonsai enthusiasts attempt to grow their own bonsai trees at some point, but most begin their lifelong love affair with bonsai by buying a tree and then display it on a bonsai display table. Plant it in nice bonsai chinese pottery and put some bonsai figurines in the pot

The Concord tree has oval colorful leaves and small yellow flowers which appear in clusters in late April and are succeeded by bright red berries that can be appreciated after the leaves drop in autumn.

The first flush of new growth on the "Concord" bonsai tree is a deep velvety purple. The leaves turn dark red in summer and hold that color both in sunny and lightly shaded locations. This is a great tree for the bonsai enthusiast!

Japanese (Laceleaf) Red Maple Bonsai Tree (Acer Palmatum)

Japanese (Laceleaf) Red Maple Bonsai Tree (Acer Palmatum)

Red Leaves. This is the famous Japanese Maple which has finely dissected palmette shaped leaves (deeply cut like the palm of the hand). Unlike many other red leaf varieties, the deeply saturated purple-red leaves of this Japanese maple resists "bronze" or "green out" during the summer. Very beautiful tree that will lend a soft, delicate texture to a patio, deck balcony or garden. Grafted. Deciduous. Keep outdoors.
