What is eMule?
At dawn of May 13th 2002 a guy called Merkur was dissatisfied with the original eDonkey2000 client and was convinced he could do better. So he did. He gathered other developers around him, and eMule Project was born. Their aim was to put the client back on track where eDonkey had been famous before, adding tons of new features and a nice GUI. Morpheus makes it easy to burn CDs or transfer audio and video files to your iPod or MP3 player. Morpheus' set of features makes it simple to search, discover, download, and play all types of media files including MP3 audio, music, movies, videos, games, photos, and documents. With its much ballyhooed Neo Network, Morpheus continues to woo users in hopes of P2P domination. The Neo Network uses something called "distributed hash tables" to make searches, and ultimately downloads, more efficient and reliable.

However, Morpheus isn't ready to abandon the rest of the P2P world and still connects to the Gnutella, Fast Track (Kazaa), eDonkey, and BitTorrent networks. In our tests, searches were extremely fast, with plenty of results appearing almost immediately. The program interface looks slick but it is cluttered with advertising contents (the ad-supported version also generated several pop-up windows, promoting the client, in our tests). Multiple searches now spawn a drawer to the application's left that features a handy progress bar. We like the network status indicator, which shows which networks you're connected to and if you're firewalled.

Morpheus's familiar amenities, such as the built-in media player and the live chat component, haven't changed much. We highly recommend Morpheus to file-sharing aficionados.

Shareaza has unique features, including ghost ratings, a completely user-configurable queue area, and multinetwork support. The program started as a Gnutella client but recently branched out and developed Gnutella2, a completely open and documented network. Shareaza's interface is easy to use, yet powerful and fully skinnable. Shareaza's download core was built to provide optimum performance from any number of sources. Shareaza can manage your download queue automatically, or you can take charge and modify the status of files or even individual physical transfers and sources.

Version 2.2.5 has multiple fixes on all supported networks, providing vastly improved multi-network, peer-to-peer file-sharing capabilities. There also are several new features, including a scheduler, a review viewer, enhanced translations, and improved metadata support. Although the bigger names in the P2P world still maintain the lion's share of users, several smaller entities have popped up. These programs appeal to those fed up with the fluff and third-party software often found in the more popular applications.

Shareaza is focused and lean, with a gorgeous interface and connections to the Gnutella2, Gnutella, eDonkey, and BitTorrent networks. It's also handsome and easy to use; we had no trouble quickly figuring out how to search, check our network status, and customize the interface through a healthy choice of skins. Search results were extremely fast, although we wish each new search automatically spawned a new tab. Shareaza also has a decent built-in media player for common audio and video formats. Other features include a chat client and the ability to schedule transfers.

The file-management system, with a slew of folders divided and subdivided into all sorts of categories, may overwhelm novices, though seasoned file-sharers probably won't have that much trouble. Overall, though, Shareaza's design, performance, and trim size provide make it a nice choice for peer-to-peer users

WinMX began its life as an OpenNAP client capable of connecting to several servers simultaneously, although Frontcode later created a proprietary protocol, termed WinMX Peer Network Protocol (WPNP), which was used starting with WinMX 2 in May 2001. WPNP version 2 was phased out as WinMX 3.0 and its WPNP version 3 protocol came into existence. Frontcode had operated several cache servers to aid WPNP network operation.

Downloads can be very fast for popular songs since the user can run a "multi-point download" that simultaneously downloads the same file in small pieces from several users. Some consider WinMX to be much safer than many other file sharing software, mainly because no spyware and adare comes with WinMX.

The WinMX program houses a few inbuilt features such as bandwidth monitoring, short messaging, and hosting chatrooms. Often, two users negotiate an exchange of their files with the help of the short messaging system or chat. After the transfers have started, one gets the option of selecting an individual bandwidth for the other to make sure both transfers end more or less at the same time. The program itself has a few drawbacks. It eats up huge amounts of memory (and noticeably slows the computer's real time clock) when run for a long time. When connecting to WinMX, you connect to the WinMX Peer Network (WPN) either as a primary or secondary user. A majority of the functions on the WPN are available to both users, but primary users tend to have better connections and have the ability to host chat rooms. WinMX, by default, will only share Audio and Video files, although, if properly configured, it can share almost every type of file.
