Paeroa & L&P

Paeroa is world famous in New Zealand for the Kiwi drink Lemon and Paeroa or L & P as it's colloquially called. L & P is iconic amongst Kiwi's and is a taste that I haven't found replicated anywhere else in the world.

L&P tastes great on it's own as well as making a great mixer....if you want a great shandy then use Lion Red (a Kiwi beer) mixed with L&P - delicious!

How Did Lemon & Paeroa come about?

New Zealand's national soft drink came about when a natural underwater mineral water spring was discovered near Paeroa. It was recognised by both early settlers as well as Maori as being a great quality mineral water full of medicinal properties. In 1904 the government had the Paeroa mineral water tested and the conclusion was met that the water was good for dyspepsia and pleasant to drink. The government didn't believe that the demand for this water would be very wide however because there was a shortage of tea in the New Zealand colony at the time.

Luckily the Paeroa Natural Mineral Water Company ignored this idea and started bottling the water in 1907. Not long after bottling began flavoring was added to the water creating the distinctive L & P taste, little could they know what they had started!

L & P Turned 100 in 2007

Here is a story from the NZ television show Close Up to commemorate L & P's 100th birthday.

Lemon & Paeroa - The Name

Apparently when L&P was first marketed they used the name Paeroa and Lemon, although this changed to Lemon and Paeroa in the late 1940s. These days most Kiwi's just refer to it as L & P.

L & P continued to be made in Paeroa until 1980 when the production was moved to Auckland, however when you drive through Paeroa you can still see the big bottle of L & P celebrating this drink's brithplace.

The L&P Bottle

The L & P bottle is brown in color and has a yellow label. The big L & P bottle in Paeroa has been there since the 1960s. Originally the town build a rocket for the Christmas of 1967 amid the growing excitement about the attempt to land on the moon that was scheduled for the following year. It's not recorded who came up with the idea of repainting the rocket in the L & P bottle, but in 1969 the L & P bottle was fully recognisable and sitting in prominence welcoming new visitors to Paeroa. I lived in Paeroa for a year and when I was travelling home from visiting family I loved seeing the bottle because it meant a cup of tea was only ten minutes away!

The area around the bottle has been upgraded since I lived there and on the footpath leading up to it there are little bubbles for the children to chase (not real ones, but it can make a great game!). There is another bottle at the other end of the town with a cafe and souvenirs available - I haven't been in that one for a number of years, but it used to have some great L & P merchandise. The original bottle is the one on the Waihi side of Paeroa, not the Auckland side and it has signs with the history of L & P clearly written.

Where is Paeroa?

Paeroa is on New Zealand's North Island at the beginning of the Coromandel Penninsula and in New Zealand's 'gold region.'

Just five minutes down the road from Paeroa is the Karangahake Gorge with it's meandering river, beautiful waterfall, scenic walk and more.

Explore the Karangahake Gorge

Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway
The Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway partly follows the old railway line between Paeroa and Waihi (closed in 1979), with the remainder of the track following the banks of the Ohinemuri River.

The breathtaking Karangahake Gorge on Coromandel Peninsula is rich in mining history and riddled with walkways and old tunnels.

The Karangahake Gorge is on State Highway 2 between Paeroa and Waihi. Site of the original gold rush in 1875 and steeped in gold mining history, it's now a more peaceful location offering visitors a perfect place to explore.

What's On in Paeroa?

I lived in Paeroa for a year many moons ago and aside from the beautiful landscape there wasn't alot of things that Paeroa was famous for (besides L & P of course).

Every February would be the motorbike street racing when the main street would be closed to traffic and everyone would be detoured around the back streets.

These days, however, there are so many things happening in Paeroa that it has gained the status of Events Capital of New Zealand!

The old Maori name for the Coromandel Range was "Te Paeroa-o-Toi" which means the long range of Toi (AD 1150). Local Maoris of the Ngati-Tamatera and Ngati-maru tribes trace their descent from the "Arawa" and the "Tainui", two canoes of the fleet (1350).
