Greeting Cards For Pagan Holidays

Paganism is an increasingly popular religion yet it is still difficult to find appropriate greeting cards for the various Pagan holidays. Most Pagans celebrate the quarter and cross-quarter holidays which are Brigid's Day or Imbolc, Ostara or Spring Equinox, Beltane, Summer Solstice or Litha, Lughsnasadh or Lammas, Mabon or Fall Equinox, Samhain or Halloween, and Yule or Winter Solstice. Here you will find appropriate Pagan Holiday Greeting Cards for most pagan holidays.

Summer Solstice Greeting Cards (buy before June 21st)

also called Litha or Midsummer

Midsummers Day has been and in many place still is celebrated much as it has been since before recorded history. This is a time of joy and plenty. This is the longest day of the year, the Sun is at its peak of fullest power. It is a time to celebrate power, strength and abundance. Yet even as we crown the Oak King with the fullness of the year, we begin to think about the waning of the year, days growing shorter. And so, the the wheel turns.

Many celebrate this holiday with a great bonfire, making offerings of the fruit and tree twigs of summer. It is traditional for the athletic to make high leaps over the fire. The belief is that the crops will grow as high as the dancers can jump, so it became a ritual competition for the good of the community. Athletic competitions, serious and less so, are still a part of many summer celebrations. Ever been to a 4th of July picnic in the U.S.?

Lughnasad Greeting Cards (buy before August 1st)

also called Lammas

This is the first of the three great harvest celebrations, celebrated by people around the world. This is the early harvest, the harvest of grains that are used to create bread, and is most associated with the corn harvest.

It is a feast celebrating both the Goddess and the God, a time of both male and female principles, but also a time of transition. Even as we reap what we have sown, gather the rewards for our work, the God willingly is sacrificed at the hand of the Goddess and blood is on the fields even as seed was spread on the fields in spring. The grain we reap is the product of a dying plant. The promise of new life in the spring is nestled in the heart of every grain we reap, even as the grain pounded into flour and kneaded into bread will sustain life through the coming seasons. The Goddess herself, now in the time of her bountiful and abundant Mother phase, is also present as the reaper of grain, the reaper of souls and life, the Crone who gently eases life into death that it may be recreated as life again.

Corn and all products of corn are most especially celebrated, including ale and beers from corn and other grains. European peoples also frequently held fairs at this time, to display their harvest products, trade horses and other livestock, as well as hiring (for a year and a day a worker would contract with an employer - until the next Lammas fair).

Mabon Greeting Cards (buy before September 19th)

Also called Fall Equinox or Witches Thanksgiving

As Lammas is the harvest of the grain, Mabon is the harvest of the orchard and garden. The plants are large and the garden gleams with bright colors, yellow squash, red tomatoes, purple eggplants, bright orange pumpkins, gourds of many colors and astounding shapes and sizes. Every day more ripens and is harvested. The cellar is full, the freezer is stuffed, the cabinet shelves are groaning.

Night and day are prefectly equal again, as they are on the Spring Equinox. Now the nights grow longer and life turns within. We reap what we have sown.

Samhain Greeting Cards (buy them before October 31st)

Halloween Greeting Cards, All Hallows Eve Greeting Cards

You may be wondering why I began with Samhain. Well tradition has it that Samhain is the Witches New Year, so I'm actually starting at the beginning.

The more reading and research I do into Halloween, the more contradictions I find and the more lovely myths and stories are exploded. In fact, Halloween, perhaps even more than Christmas, is a mishmash of many different traditions and customs and stories that were similar or sort of related or occurred about the same time.

So I will leave it to you, if you are feeling very scholarly, to read books such as "Death Makes a Holiday" by David J. Skal (very informative) and "Halloween" by Nicholas Rogers (another good one) as well as looking into all of the many books devoted to the new version of Paganism, Wicca and otherwise, that speak of the holiday.

Most modern Pagans celebrate Halloween as the Witches New Year, with suitable festivities; costumes, parties, feasting, & ritual. Costumed festivities are especially enjoyed by pagans. I believe this is because so many of out cannot be "out" in our daily lives, depending on the amount of Christian suppression in our area (and yes, it definitely exists). So on Halloween, we get to dress in our witchy finest. We are less IN costume, than finally OUT of costume!

Traditionally at this time of year the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead is thin. Many Pagans honor their friends, family or others who have passed on by creating an altar with pictures and offerings. It is a good time for spell casting and divination as well.

The cards I have created for Samhain are meant to be light-hearted and fun.

Yule Greeting Cards (buy them before December 21st)

also called Winter Solstice or Midwinter Feast

Yule, or Winter Solstice has been celebrated by people for centuries. The diversity of celebrations is as diverse as the cultures. Depending on the climate, Midwinter's Day is often a welcome harbinger of good things to come. A time to celebrate that "we've survived the winter this far, we'll make it through".

Many books have been written about these winter celebrations. My favorite is "When Santa was a Shaman" by Tony Van Renterghem. He does an understandable and clear tracing of the origins of the figure we now think of as Santa Claus as well as the origins of the Christmas tree, from back when it was the Yule log.

For once, I must admit, not without a rueful chuckle, that the Fundamentalist Christians are quite correct that nearly every common custom we practice around Christmas today were originally the Pagan customs celebrated for Yule, Winter Solstice, or Midwinter Feast. Even the story of the birth of a God at this time of year, a Sun or Son God who brings warmth and strength back to the earth as he slowly grows through the remainder of the winter, nurtured at the breast of the Goddess.

So, as Pagans, what and how do we celebrate? I suggest you follow your own conscience and desires. The sharing of gifts is a very worthy tradition, as is family gatherings, and good food warm from a kitchen full of blessings and abundance. The Yule log, in tradition, was often specially chosen months before the celebration and anointed with rich oils before being ritually set aflame in the family fireplace to signify and welcome the return of the Sun God. Evergreen trees were brought inside and decorated with candles to celebrate the renewal of life.

Twenty-one of my Snowflake Pentagram Winter Solstice cards were sold yesterday! Imbolc Greeting Cards (buy before Feb. 1st or 2nd)

Also called Brigid's Day, or Candlemas

Brighid, from Ireland, is the triple goddess of the arts, poetry, smithcraft and healing. This is a time for initiation (of young girls into the mysteries) and purification. Older witches renew their vows. The earth begins to stir with life. The garden is blessed and prepared for spring planting, and the house is given a "clean sweep" to prepare for the Goddess' return - very possibly the origins of our spring cleaning.

Brigids Day is celebrated with light and fire. If you have greenery left from Winter Solstice (most Pagan households will set some aside and save it) now is the time to burn it. We are lighting the Goddess' way back from the underworld, and celebrating the return of warmth and light to the world. Many candles are lit, and the Ladys colors now are white and red.

Brighid brings the fire of inspiration for artists, and so this is a good time for us to light candles to her and ask for blessings and inspiration for our work in this new cycle.

Green Corn Feast Greeting Card (buy before August 1st)

A Native American Tradition

The Native American holiday of the Green Corn Feast or Green Corn Festival varies from tribe to tribe, and in some tribes is, indeed, celebrated to this day. It is considered such an important and sacred festival, that very little information is actually available about it, being kept within the tribe. Some tribes celebrate it earlier than August 1st, believing that the green corn must be blessed, and the homes & people of the tribe cleansed and made worthy, before the first corn could be harvested.

Beltane Greeting Cards (buy before May 1st)

also called May Day

May Day is still celebrated in many cultures and countries as well as by Pagans. This is a time of great merriment, a celebration of the joy of life reborn. Young birds are hatching, the stag is rutting, flowers are blooming, and the trees are putting out their first leaves.

The maypole is chosen, or a may tree. Of course, it is a phallic symbol of the burgeoning life and fertility of spring. The celebrants dance around it, winding it in bright ribbons, symbolic of the interweaving of our lives with all things. A May Queen is chosen and reigns for a day with honor, she is sprinkled and crowned with flowers. The lads and ladies "go a-maying", picking spring flowers and making garlands of them to wear. Special sugary treats are made and shared. A great bonfire is lit, and leaping over it brings good luck.

Beltane is probably my second favorite holiday with its unbounded expressions of the joy of life.

These cards are awesome! What I would do is make a lens for each season or holiday and link this lens to each specific lens. Kind of like looking at an astrology chart with this lens the hub or the sun with a spoke going out to each new lens. Just a suggestion as to where to go next.
