Pagan Symbols

Pagan symbols are powerful representative images, many of which have existed since the beginning of human history.  These images are connected to our subconscious and so when we utilize them as a part of spellwork, pagan symbols allow us to tap into the energy from our resting mind.

One good way to increase your knowledge and understanding of pagan symbols is through the Tarot.  Many who practice neopagan religions as a form of divination use tarot cards.  There are endless varieties of Tarot decks that appeal to followers of many different religions.  Spend some time looking for a deck that really calls to you on a symbolic level.  Some tarot decks rely more heavily on traditional pagan symbols than others; so if that is a concern, make sure you pay attention to it.

Most tarot decks come with some form of guide that will provide you with information about the pagan symbols and the meaning of each card.  In some cases, it may be a good idea to invest in another book that is dedicated to your specific deck.

As you grow more familiar with your tarot deck, you may wish to start listing some of the pagan symbols that are particularly meaningful to you in your book of shadows.  That way you can find them easily when you are preparing to cast a spell.

In addition to the vast number of pagan symbols there are also whole alphabets based on ancient forms that can be a powerful addition to you spell work.  The late period Celtic alphabet is one that is popular, especially for those who follow Celtic traditions closely.  The runic alphabets of the Norse are also very popular for spellwork.  Runes carry rich meaning in each letter and can be used in divination.

The most commonly used runic alphabet today is called the elder futhark.  Predating the runic alphabet is the ancient Etruscan alphabet, which has its roots in the ancient Greek alphabet.

It is easy to experiment with using the pagan symbols found in different ancient alphabets as a part of their spellwork.  Focus on using a letter with a particularly strong meaning, or spell out a particularly strong word or name.  The use of ancient alphabets also gives your spellwork a level of secrecy, as most people would not know what they are looking at.
