Due to the fact that I have a website, I am Pagan, devoted to my own journey through Paganism, I occasionally get emails with various questions about Paganism.

Not long ago I received an email from a young man who explained that he has become interested in Paganism as a religion for himself. He had done some reading on my website and felt drawn to my words. Thus he wrote and asked what my suggestions would be as he continues on his path.

My first email said read, read, read, on the Internet and in books. Ask questions, too! I no longer have my message board because it was getting SPAMMED, but a very active, diverse, and helpful community of Pagans exists at The Cauldron, and I directed him there. I also told him to feel free to write again if he wished.

Beginners Reading List

I just received another email, requesting a reading list. I do have a reading list on the
website, but it is getting longer all the time and can certainly be overwhelming.

So these are the books I suggested for him, and for anyone who is exploring Paganism.

1. The Truth About Witchcraft Today by Scott Cunningham; This little book of just over 200 pages is an excellent introduction to Paganism, particularly the Wiccan tradition, but it does apply to most Pagan paths. Not only is this a good first read for the neophyte, in my opinion, it is the book to hand to your friends and relatives if you have begun self-identifying as Pagan. It will reassure Mom that you are not sacrificing babies out in the garage.

2. Spiral Dance by Starhawk; Some purists of Wicca cringe at this book, however it is an excellent beginning point for those interested in Paganism, who are not necessarily specifically drawn to Wicca, but who are interested in a larger pantheon of beliefs to chose from. This book also gives a good look at daily life as a Pagan.

3. When God was a Woman by Merlin Stone; I personally believe that this is one of the most important books on Paganism that you can read. It gives a historical overview of where the Old Religions come from, what they are based upon, and
their evolution through the ages. Though the subject sounds very heavy, this is a very readable book as well.

4. Playful Magic by Janina Renee; I love this book for it's very down to earth melding of magic with daily life. Non-denominational Paganism, too, which I think is best for a beginner. When you see your path, you will know it.

So there is my beginner's essential reading list. There are so many excellent books on Paganism available now, unlike when I grew interested back in the 80s, that I'm sure any group of Pagans will have a dozen or so suggestions to add, and of course, my reading list at the I am Pagan website is much longer. This was created to be a short list that
wouldn't overwhelm the mind or the pocketbook of a neophyte. I hope it helps you to find your path.

Blessedbe.

About foovay

Hi! I am Summer Fey Foovay, also known as The Demented Pixie. I like to think of myself as a 21st century renaissance woman. That is, someone who is not restricted by our current societies concept, that you may only be competent in one area. Maaaaaaaybe two. I have a diversity of interests, talents, and abilities (as I believe we all do) and that is reflected in the ever growing variety and content of my home on the web. I am an artist, a writer, and a webdesigner. And that's just right now - over the last 40+ years I have pursued interests and careers from animal care to exotic dancer.

You can find links to all my projects on the web at Demented-Pixie.com. Adult projects are at Webitchress.com (my evil alter ego ;) )
