Mysteryshopping and Merchandising

Paid To Shop

As the Admin of the Paid To Shop web site I often get the question " is there a difference between mystery shopping and merchandising? "
This short article is directed at answering that question.
Mystery shopping, sometimes called secret shopping, or shadow shopping involves sub-contracting to a company and going to a retail location, theatre, restaurant, etc and performing pre-defined actions with the intent of grading customer service, quality of merchandise, overall customer service, and then reporting back to the mother company.
This is generally done without the establishment ever knowing who you are (there are exceptions to the "privacy" policy- for example the famous "ABC" fast food company upon completion of a successful "shop" will have you introduce yourself as a representative of the company and hand out gift certificates to any "outstanding" employee%u2026).
Merchandising, on the other hand, is a straightforward sub-contracted job where you bring in a product and stock it or set it up. This is done with full knowledge of everyone involved that you are a representative of the store.
The confusion between mystery shopping and merchandising usually comes from the fact that many of the mother companies sub contract both types of jobs and most mystery shoppers also merchandise.
I hope this helps clear up any confusion between mystery shopping and merchandising.
