The Reality of Paid CDL Training

When it comes to paid CDL training there are several things you should consider before you go out and sign up for company sponsored paid CDL training. Paid CDL training is training provided by a trucking company school. In exchange for CDL Training you will be asked for a commitment to work for that trucking company for one year. The trucking company will provide you paid CDL training at no cost as long as you fulfill this obligation to work.
You will be asked to sign a contract, usually for one year, agreeing to work for that trucking company. If you break the contract you will be charged for the cost of the CDL training school. Usually the trucking companies that provide paid CDL training will put a large price tag on the cost of their CDL training if you break this contract.
Read these contracts very carefully and understand the consequences if you should change your mind during or after training. Paid CDL training is a good option for people with no money who do not qualify for a Government grant or a loan although there are other and sometimes better options.
There are other important factors to consider here also. Most of the trucking companies that offer Paid CDL Training over book their CDL training classes. Why do they do this? They know that some students will not be able to keep up with the fast paced training and drop out. Some people will not keep up and the trucking company school will dismiss them.
The fact of the matter is that they want the best trucking students driving their trucks. The problem with this for students is whether you quit, or are let go, you are responsible for the part of the CDL training you did complete. You signed a contract and if you were there for a 6 days, you will owe them thousands of dollars for the training you completed and have no CDL! It happened to several people in my CDL training class.
So if you are a slow learner, not mechanically inclined, or don't perform well in stressful situations, I would go with a private CDL training school.
There are also private CDL training schools that have job placement assistance. Usually the trucking companies that these schools place you with offer tuition reimbursement. This is similar in that they will reimburse you for the cost of your CDL training usually over the course of one year of employment. It is the same as company paid CDL training in this respect.
The difference here is private schools make money from training students to get their CDL. Without students they don't make money, so they will be more likely to get you your CDL without letting you go. If you choose this option just make sure it is a large CDL training school with several large trucking companies using the school as a hiring pool.
Paying for your own CDL Training gives you the option to choose where you want to work with no commitment. This way you can avoid long term contracts with a low paying trucking company. Very few Truck Driver Training Schools are able to finance students any more but there are still a few schools that will, and one happens to be one of the best trucking schools in the country!
