Are you a chronic pain sufferer? -- Will you be?
John E. Sarno, M.D.
Where does it hurt?
Does the statement at the top of this page have anything to do with the fact that the health care system doesn't appear to have a solution for my chronic pain? Please allow me to share my own personal experience and how my college age son came through when the medical system failed. Maybe you have been told to "suck it up and learn to live with it" as I have. Could the doctor possibly understand how much pain I am in? I seriously began to doubt. I understand your pain because I have lived with it for years.Don't get the impression as you read that I am only talking about back pain. You would be wrong. I am talking about most chronic PAIN (long term - more than a few weeks).
Let me begin by making it very clear that I am not a doctor and am only sharing my experience to give you a place to investigate your own condition and its cure.
Relax, close your eyes allow your mind to make contact with your body. Are you experiencing pain at this moment anywhere in your body? NO, move a little. How about now? No? Stand up, walk around, bend and move more aggressively. Do you feel it? Not yet, answer this simple question: Has there been a time in your life when you would have responded with a excruciating YES and if so do you fear that it may happen again?
If you are now or have ever experienced pain that you fear may return at any time this article is written for you. Don't fit into this group? Who knows tomorrow may be your opportunity to join the tens of millions of chronic pain sufferers on this planet. It can start with a simple sneeze, a car running a red light, a fall on the ice, bending slipping on your shoes or picking up your child. You may simply wake up and be in pain and not have the foggiest idea why. Even more distressing, truth be told, apparently neither does that doctor you visited. My last time was stepping on a tiny stick. Reading on may be well worth you while.
Who am I and why should you pay attention to me?
On the day I am writing this article I am 58 with gray hair, a lovely wife, five children, two son-in-laws, one daughter-in-law and six wonderful grandchildren. I have dealt with the fear of or actual debilitating pain for most of my adult life. The last three years have been the worst with two surgeries and pain which will not leave me alone.I am retired from many years in commercial construction management (came up through the field) and have a construction consulting, home and commercial building inspection business ten years old. I am real, not a doctor, and not a figment of some crazy marketing guys imagination. Although numerous highly regarded intelligent doctors have tried with physical therapy, medications and surgery they were not able to cure my pain. I was told to limit my activity and be prepared to live with pain, its associated medications and most likely additional surgeries for the remainder of my life. I was told that I should not pick up anything over 10 lbs.
I am now off of ALL medications. I moved to a new home doing most of the work alone. If that was not enough I turned around and moved my father as well. I never dreamed I would be comfortable packing boxes, let alone lifting and moving them along with most of the furniture.
How was I able to do that?

A few years ago my college age son handed me a book he was attracted to in a used book store because of my chronic pain condition. He said; "Dad, you need to read this book." I didn't take it seriously. What could this kid possibly understand about my pain? Let alone that I was so heavily medicated that my love for reading had become a worthless unfulfilled desire. I set the book aside with others for later.
At some point I noticed the book and decided to glance through it. My interest was inspired just enough to do a Google search on the author and the subject. Was I ever surprised by my findings? A #1 New York Times Best Selling Doctor/Author interviewed on 20/20. Apparently this guy was held in very high esteem by thousands of patients including many well known celebrities. Watching an online video of the 20/20 interview I realized that I had actually seen it and was so impressed that I thought it worthy of note but had completely forgotten about it until my son's actions jogged my memory. Be patient, I will share the video with you later on this page.
Keep reading there is much more!
My interest became a passion as I searched and read everything I could find on the internet about the man and his propositions. I ordered all of his books which I have now read multiple times. It took some time for me to get this through my thick scull but it finally clicked and I knew that this wasn't some quack but an innovator of gigantic proportion. How did I figure that out? How about when my chronic pain began to disappear? It worked, my pain was subsiding and coming under my control I was shocked. Considering my past experience and what I had been lead to believe by my doctors what I was experiencing was impossible. But it happened first brief times without pain then longer times and now most of my time is pain free. I felt like climbing on a tall building like King Kong and shouting it from the roof tops. But you can't do that because for the most part, taken at face value, few would believe what I and thousands of others have personally experienced. You must be serious and willing to absorb and believe the information. Most people are simply not willing to accept that this is possible. Are you?
If I attempted to explain it here you would decide that I am a nut and don't have a clue of how medical conditions that lead to chronic pain work. You might not be far from the truth, but be assured of this. NO PAIN, can you say the same? Please listen to your pain and allow it to determine if this just might be worthy of additional consideration.
Please allow me to offer a little background to whet your appetite.

We are experiencing an epidemic of chronic pain which has never been experienced in previous history. You would think with our advancements in medicine that pain would be reduced? You would be wrong. Don't believe me; ask the over sixty million chronic pain sufferers in the US alone what they think about it. Epidemic - New cases in a given human population, during a given period, at a rate that substantially exceeds what is "expected," based on recent experience. The failure of medicine's practitioners to recognize and appropriately treat these conditions has produced a public health and economic crises of major proportion in the US. Don't believe - simply take a look at your health insurance cost. There is an on going epidemic of chronic pain as well as other medical condition in America incomparable to any other place on earth. Does that make any sense? Here are the facts:
Here is the Gold
Chronic Pain Syndromes: We don't know the cause of chronic pain or why it has dramatically increased since the late 1960's. It is devastating the lives of millions and created a proliferation of pain clinics in recent years.Fibromyalgia: A term adopted by the rheumatology community in the early 1980's for a condition they are still unable to explain. In the year 2000 an article in The New Yorker magazine noted that there were six million Americans (mostly women) with this disorder of unknown cause.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: This condition became popular in the 1980's attributed to repetitive motion. Amazingly on the farms, in the typing pools and factories of the past, where repetitive motion was the norm, no such condition was prevalent.
Tension and Migraine Headache: Isn't it amazing that when we think of the past and the stress experienced with world wars, stock market crash and depression that now these headache conditions are more prevalent?
Tinnitus: Ringing in the ears experienced by many as they age. I had been told that others with the severity of mine had committed suicide to stop the torment. What caused it? They weren't able to tell me. Interestingly mine drastically improved along with the reduction of my chronic pain. What is the deal with that?
I could go on and on but you get the point. I was amazed to read how other issues may have similar associations such as gastric reflux, peptic ulcer, hiatus hernia, irritable bowel syndrome, spastic colitis, frequent urination, sexual dysfunction along with others.
I could go to great length in an attempt to share my research with you here but not being a medical professional that wouldn't be proper. Let's leave it to professionals who have spent their lives befuddled and learned the answers to these issues. I can simply give you my humble remark that before I learned about this marvelous doctor I hurt and now I don't.
Howard Stern put it this way: "I beg anyone who is seeking a solution to pain to study the amazing and revolutionary approach outlined here. I did, and it changed my life." You won't know if it will change your life if you fail to check it out.

cdhilton says:
My first back surgery failed in less than a week and a second was performed weeks later. My limp improved following the second but it was all I could do to walk from the sofa to the front door. Following five months of recovery, debilitating pain and inability to do much of anything with the assistance of medications (including narcotics) my pain was reduced and I was able to function. However, I was forced to limit my movements to control the pain and had great fear of reoccurrence. My creativity and ability to concentrate was gone. My surgeon told me that I could have a third surgery but there would be an 80% possibility of failure and a much longer recovery period. He also stated that I needed to find a less physically demanding job and would be on mediation for the balance of my life.
I learned after the fact that I had wasted a considerable amount of time and money on actions which had a very limited possibility of success. Using Dr. Sarno’s methods I have the pain under control, am off of ALL medications, able to do most of what I couldn’t do before and the fear of reoccurrence is gone. If I had only known about this prior to surgery, based on what I have learned, I don’t think that they would have been necessary.

I strongly believe in the mind body connection and have used alternative methods from the beginning. Unfortunately, my chronic pain was caused by medical mistakes and there's a level that I'll probably have to live with. Thanks for passing on some great information.
