My Extreme Back Pain Experience
Have you ever had back pain so bad that you could hardly breath? A back pain so sharp that you could not tell where the pain was coming from? Back pain so horrible that you wish to pass out just to get through the horrible experience. It is amazing to me how such small muscles in the back can cause such extreme pain throughout your body. In October 2008, I woke up on a saturday morning, took a couple of steps out of bed, felt a sharp pain and thought I was having a heart attack. The scary thing is that I am 33 years old, lead a relatively healthy lifestyle, and I thought if I was having a heart attack, this is not good at all.
- My chest was tight.
- I could hardly breathe.
- I lay out on the floor trying to stop the pain.
After a half day trip to the emergency room, having blood drawn, scans and tests galore, it all came back to one thing... Lower Back Pain!!!
My Back Pain Dilema
I know that the pain that I felt that October morning was mild compared to most peoples back pain. I have seen and read stories of back pain suferers who have endured extreme surgeries to return home and endure the pain again and again. My hope is that by sharing alternative treatments that I can help to alleviate some of the pain that we all endure.
Stretching Routine for Back Pain Relief
I HATE taking medication if there are alternative methods to relieving the pain. So I talked to several doctors, researched the internet, and came up with a simple routine, so I thought, to mitigate my pain. This routine of mine works 90% of the time, and it is quite simple:STRETCH HAMSTRINGS EVERY NIGHT BEFORE BED
- Sit down in front of the TV on the floor right before bed.
- With legs in a "V", reach for your toes and hold for 30 seconds. Do not bounce.
- Sit back up, and reach for the sky for 10 seconds.
- Reach back down and stretch both hands to the left leg (30 seconds).
- Sit up and reach for the sky for 10 seconds.
- Reach back down and stretch both hands to the right leg (30 seconds).
- Sit up and reach for the sky for 10 seconds.
- Repeat Twice.
- Lay on your back, keep the left leg down and slowly lift the right leg straight up as far as you can and hold for as long as you can. Keep your leg straight as possible.
- Repeat with the other leg.
In less than 10 minutes a night, this has helped me to get through most of my back pain. Simply stretching my hamstrings.
Ice Packs and Stretching Bands
Other Methods to Cure Chronic Pain
My back pain still persists for many reasons. If you are like me, 90% is not good enough. Medicating myself continually is not an option. So how do I plan to remedy all my back pain? By trying other people's methods and finding the one that works best for me. There is no cure all for everyone. Everyone must go out and find what works for them. Posture and exercise are going to help, but so might a simple back support belt, or a small pillow placed in your office chair. Maybe removing the wallet from your back pocket will be the cure. Here are a few methods that are being offered by others who have found their cure to chronic back pain. Please explore your options and share your results in my guest book. Together we can build a source for everyone to find their own method to a Life without back pain! Back Pain Therapy Plans

- That is pretty much my situation. Constant dull pain in the lower back if I do not constantly stretch. I am trying to begin to build muscle in my core and hopefully this will add additional support and eliminate the dull pain.

- Have you thought of seeing a Chiropractor. They are the experts when it comes to back pain. Stretching is good and all but does it fix the problem causing the pain or just make you feel better for a little while?

- I have visited the Chiropractor on one extremely painful event that I could not correct myself. They are definitely helpful and I know plenty of people who swear by them for regular adjustments. I was not interested in the routine adjustments. I come from the school of prevention. If I do regular maintenance, my back stays healthy and I don't need to go in for a repair. But there will be occasions when an expert is needed. The stretching and working out are my maintenance plan, and so far so good.

- NC how you doin mate???Well I hope ...
You appear to be answering your own questions - your maintenance program done correctly and consistently keeps the pain away. What you also need to do is work out what are the underlying causes - such as...
A/ Back posture - are you doing anything that could be causing your back troubles - like sitting cross legged, standing in the one spot for toooooo long, laying on the couch watching t.v etc
If so, then mindfully correct it.
b/ Stress - emotionally, mentally and physically can knock your overall health and well being making you slacken off on the prevention side or the body is at its lowest levels - energy wise and prone for weakness to show.
c/ How's your health? Are you eating right? How's your lower body fat-tummy fat? You did mention your core was getting stronger and that's what you should be doing - but what kind of upper body weight is the pelvic area being asked to carry in relation to your core and lower body and leg strength?
d/ How's the shoes you are wearing? Do they help or contribute to the overall imbalances and pain experienced ? Are they straining the sciatica nerve or causing undue stress and pain along the nerve?
e/ I love to walk making sure I walk with a symmetrical motion (sorry no power walker here though) opposed to hands in the pocket (no dog so need to worry there...). Walking helps as a stress release/meditation thing as well as balancing, strengthening and loosening the body.
Just remember in most cases if you -
1/ Stretch tight muscles;
2/ Strengthen weak muscles;
3/ Balance joints that aren't moving just right; and
4/ Remove ALL causes.
Follow this 4 step process - addressing each systematically together should set you up to eliminate your back aches and pains as long as (as you say) you keep the maintenance/prevention thing happening... :-}}:-}} :-}}
Hope that helps and take care ...

- I have some discomfort in my lower back. Not really what I would call pain, but when sitting for a long time, or driving long distance, my lower back starts to ache a bit. I know what caused it - sitting on the couch playing video games until my eyes are bloodshot. I'll see if I can use any of your techniques. Maybe it'll help me with my little problem! :)
