Try This Alternative to Dyeing Eggs at Easter

Start a new family tradition this year and let your kids paint a wooden keepsake egg. This is a really great alternative to dyeing real eggs. They're unbreakable, cruelty-free, and will be enjoyed for many years to come!

Both my girls have painted a wooden egg every year for Easter and they love looking at them and remembering how old they were when each one was painted. They are all dated with the year on the bottom and coated with a satiny clear finish. Casey now has a full dozen keepsake eggs and Starly is always frustrated because she always has less than her sister.

*It's never too early to start planning this craft project!! Wooden eggs can be found at your local craft store, but they sell out fast and are especially hard to find just before Easter. I usually stock up with extra eggs for next year just to avoid hunting them down at the last minute.

How Our Wooden Easter Egg Tradition Began

My family's quest to find cruelty-free Easter eggs.

Our daughter, Casey was about 6 months old on her first Easter. Since she was our first child, I was excited to get started with creating holiday traditions that she would look forward to every year. Being a vegetarian, I was not ready to make factory farmed hens suffer for the sake of a few dyed eggs that would end up in the trash anyway. If I could egg substitutes for cooking and baking, surely I could find an alternative to dyeing easter eggs. Luckily, I found some wooden eggs at the craft store that were just the same size as a real egg. The bottoms were flat so they stood up perfectly on their own. I bought them up and found some non-toxic paint in pretty pinks and white. I painted the egg with several coats of the pretty pink paint, waiting patiently to be sure they were dry between coats. When the egg was evenly coated with pink paint I presented it to Casey. While she obliviously slobbered on my perfectly painted egg, I dipped her little hands in the white paint while my husband stood there thinking I was insane. He was absolutely right. The egg slipped right out of her wet, painted covered hands. She had paint on her face, clothes and hair. Realizing that I had better be quick about finishing this little project, I quickly grabbed her fat little foot and painted it white. I pressed her foot on the egg and her toes gripped around it leaving her footprint perfectly stamped in white paint. The result was so adorable, a masterpiece! (You can see a photo of her very first egg below.)

Supplies Needed to Paint Wooden Eggs

  • Wooden Eggs
  • Non-Toxic Craft Paint in Several Colors - You can find Ceramcoat paint at your local craft store or Walmart. I like to let my girls pick out their own paints for this project each year. Looking back, I can see their personalities reflected in their color choices.
  • Paintbrushes - You will need a paintbrush for each color of paint you plan to use. Inexpensive kids watercolor brushes work great.
  • Permanent Fine Tipped Art Pens - These work great for adding small details to your eggs. Make sure the paint is completely dry first.
  • Toothpicks and Old Sharpened Pencils - These make great tools for painting small details. Dip the point in the paint and 'dot' on your egg to make polka dots, eyes, etc.
  • Clear Spray Finish Coat - This will seal your eggs and protect them from scratches and it also adds a beautiful glossy finish. *Be sure to pick a finishing coat that is "non-yellowing".
  • Time - This can be a bit time consuming so plan ahead.

Painting Your Wooden Eggs

A Few Simple Instructions & Tips!

  • Spread newspaper on you table to catch drips and make clean up time easier.
  • Make sure the kids are wearing paint smocks or old clothes. Ceramcoat and similar craft paints can leave permanent stains in fabric. Treat any drips quickly with cold soapy water and rinse thoroughly.
  • Paint each egg with a base color. Let dry. Repeat. Older kids will want to do this themselves, but I've learned that it works best to do this ahead of time for younger children.
  • Let the kids decide which colors they want to use on their egg and pour a small amount of each color onto a paper plate. Give them a different paintbrush for each color to avoid a batch of brown eggs.
  • Paint the eggs. You may want to allow drying time between colors to avoid color bleeding. If the kids are small they might want to use their hands and fingers to paint the eggs. Fingerprints make great polka dots!
  • Let the eggs dry completely on a wire wrack or plastic plate, not paper, or your paint will stick to it and you'll have to peel it off.
  • Add the names or initials and date to the bottom of the eggs.
  • Spray with a non-yellowing clear coat sealer to give the eggs a glossy finish. Let dry overnight.
