How to Paint Trees in a Landscape Painting How to Paint Birch Trees

Basic information to learn how to paint trees in a landscape painting. The initial sketch is important when studying how to paint landscapes. The sketch should indicate the masses of leaves if the tree is in the middle ground of the picture. Light and shaded areas of the masses of leaves as well as the trunk and branches are important considerations.

Trees are an important subject in many landscape paintings. Include a sketch pad in your art supplies, and, when making a sketch of your picture before painting, note how the branches leave the main trunk and how the smaller branches taper to the ends of the twigs. A study of bare trees will help in the placement of the leaf masses which grow at the ends of the branches. Depending on the species of the tree you are painting, areas of the sky will show through the leaves. If necessary, the sky color can be added in very small areas after the painting of the tree is completed

How to Paint Trees

Painting Leaf Masses

Leaf Masses
First of all, observe the overall shape of the tree - the species.
And then consider the shapes of the masses of leaves.
Many trees have clumps of leaves and a general shadow area in each of these shapes, depending on the direction of the light source.

Although there are many ways to paint trees and you will develop your own way of painting, this information should help you get started in observing this particular subject matter. It is a way an artist might show sunlight on a leafy tree.

These are the steps I took in painting this tree.

I mixed 3 shades of green paint

With a pencil, I drew the trunk and branches and then I very lightly indicated the general areas of the masses of leaves.

With the medium green, using a small flat brush (a small well-worn brush works well) the leaf masses were lightly dabbed.

Now the light green was lightly applied where the sun hit the leaves, and the dark green lightly indicated the shadow side of the leaf masses.

How to Paint Birch Bark

A method I used to paint birch bark. Visit the sites on the internet listed below for other artists' approach to this subject.

Three paint colors:
A dark mix - dark blue and brown mixed together
Medium gray
White added to the medium gray - mix a very light color

I applied the medium gray down the center part of the tree trunk. Working wet on wet, the dark mix was applied to the shaded side, blending the edge where the dark and medium colors meet. The technique was repeated with the very light mix on the sunny side of the tree.

While the paint was still wet, I wiped out the brush and dry brushed a few curved strokes from the dark side toward the middle section so the direction of the brushstrokes indicated the rounded shape of the tree.

A highlight was added to the edge of the light side with an offwhite. For reflected light on the shadow side, a bit of the dark mix was added to the offwhite and applied to the edge near the base.

With a small flat brush, a few dark spots were added. With the brush wiped out, a few more spots were lightly brushed on the trunk.
